Which difficulty level do you mean by "hardmode"? The highest one? (Super-spy) In Zeboyd's previous games, I believe the third difficulty level was called "hard" and the fourth one was something like "insane".
Remember you can switch difficulty level at any time, so if there's just one fight you can't get past you could turn down difficulty just for that fight and turn it back up after.
(I just started playing on Heroine and IIRC I beat the first fight in 2 rounds with Drown + Laser, so I assume you are talking about either a different fight or a different difficulty.)
I haven't done the first fight on hardest but if I had to guess its either going to be Laser, Water, Defend, Laser, Water . Or Laser, Water, Defend, Heal, Water, Defend, Heal, Water. The second strat is just super defensive in case the first strat doesn't kill fast enough.. If that doesn't work I can go and look into the fight and confirm a strat for hardest, but honestly you have so few abilitites that this strat is likely the best.
Edit: Okay just looked into it. This fight is alot tighter than it needs to be on hardest. No mistakes are allowed. Its Laser, Water, Heal, Defend, Heal, (now switch tabs to use "Breather" which heals and defends), Laser, Water. If you want a mechanical explanation this gets in as many Lasers as we can squeeze in and as many Hyper Waters as we can, but even then we'll fall short unless.. we use a Desperation Focus Water.
So we start with a Laser and our first Water is double damage from Hyper. Next we stall to set up the timing for our next Hyper by Healing, Defending and Healing again. We use Breather when we have 1 bar of Hyper so that we can Laser at 2 bars and let him hit us into negatives for a Desperation Hyper Water attack for just barely enough damage to finish him. We also need the Lasers to get enough Style to use the Desperation attack.
Edit: Sorry, wrote Focus instead of Hyper. Fixed now.
It doesn't work if you beat him and die. After closing and reopening the game, the dog's first attack does 20 damage. If you win the battle, die, game over, go to title screen, and start a new game, the dog does 24 and then 26 damage, and you always die. Also, you can walk anywhere—no collisons.
Super, super buggy.
