Story based indie like, art-work heavy games?

Let me think.

Closest thing that comes to mind is this one. It's not really like Child of Light, but the graphics are hand-drawn and it does have a story, a bit cryptic I'd say though. The game doesn't entirely revolve around the story anyway, most of the time you're wandering around in the water exploring new places.
It plays like some sort of metroidvania, in the sense that there are a lot of places you see that you can't access right away because you need the right powers. There are a lot of secrets and secret bosses too.
Also the music is nice.
The only negative thing that I can think of is that the whole game is rather big and some places make you feel lost, which is not necessarily a bad thing. There's a map of the whole game however, so no fear.

Maybe Bastion and Transistor (same developers) would be of interest to you.

Aquaria is beautiful, more like metroid then RPG really (one big map, and you are getting abilities that provide you access to new areas of map), but who has never wished to be one little mermaid :)

Child of Light kind of reminds me of the first two Paper Mario games, if that means anything to you.

some considered metroid rpg, because had back track get new items to unlock other area's. Konami took meriod design made tons of 2D side scrolling RPG's thanks to that game, Castlevannia Symphony of the Night, consider great classic one my favourite games of all time.

for OP if u seen youtube videos of child of light, the combat was ripped from Grandia series, i recommend checking it out if u have PS3 console, on PC u could get PSone emulator it works 100% now, PS2 had bad port of Grandia 2 best was dreamcast version. I loved Grandia 3.

like turn base combat any of Final Fantasy games is good choice. Child of light had abit of exploring aspect, still combat is Turned base.

I just finished Bastion right after completing Child of Light. The two mesh well together.

All the games noted here are good but they have differences. Bastion, Transistor and Aquaria you have no party. Bastion and Aquaria are action games but Bastion's story is very much like this one. Transistor is more like a RTwP (real time with pause) game, excellent story and artwork but it's not anything cute. If you want fights, party & strange characters like this one, FF series are your games. I can definitely vouch for FF7&8, haven't played the rest.

Want to same combat get PSX/PS2 Emulator get Grandia series
want world experience get SNES emulator play Metroid, PSX Castlevannia, PC anything thats Metroidvannia type, Child of light mostly puzzles and back tracking nothing fits the bill like metroidvannia or metroid style game.

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is somewhat similar, but also a quite different concept resolving around beats/music instead of rhymes. Though it have a nice atmosphere and more challenging puzzles. Give it a try http://store.steampowered.com/app/231040

Watch the use of the e-word. You're rising a perma-ban, you know.
