Game Crashing on startup
Hi everyone, I bought the game today, installed correctly along with Uplay, but as soon as I launch it, it crash saying that "Child of light has stopped working" . I have a very powerful pc with Windows 8 so for sure I met all the game requirements...what could it be? I also just found out there is no refund policy and it's quite annoying :(

Mine is crashing as well, was working fine last time I played on the same system, offline mode doesn't help, reinstalling the game doesn't help. now with the Civilisation VI crashing error that's 1/2 my Steam games buggered.

Is this being patched? It's September 03 today, so the issue has been known for nearly a month now.

Having the same problem. Tried all the fixes I could find in this thread. Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm running an i5-9400F, RTX 3060 Ti, 32GB RAM

From the above guide and comments, I was able to fix the game crash after some trial-and-error. I have a new hybrid-core 12th gen cpu so I also set the "ProcessorCountLieForHybridCPU" to 16.

So the steps I followed that work:

For the tool: Search the web for adk-install (direct links might give old versions), look for "Download and install the Windows ADK", select the correct version for your operating system (Windows 10/11), ignore the PE download. Run the program and ONLY install the application compatibility toolkit.

To apply the fix:
- Open the new app "Compatibility Administrator (32-bit)"
- Right-click the current database under "Custom Databases" and rename it to something like "Game compatibility fixes" (as the Max Payne guide notes)
- With that database highlighted, click "Fix"
- Fill in the fields of name and vendor (not important if incorrect), and then browse for the game
- Click Next twice (ignore the first Compatibility Modes screen)
- Scroll down and click the checkbox next to ProcessorCountLie
- Click Parameters while ProcessorCountLie is highlighted
- enter 16 into the "Command Line" field and click OK
- Repeat the above 2 steps for ProcessorCountLieForHybridCPU if you have different types of processor cores (like Intel's E and P cores on 12th gen processors)
- Click Next
- Click Finish (optionally click "Auto-Generate" first.. it adds uplay_r1_loader.dll to it.. not sure if that makes a difference)
(*If any mistakes were made, simply go back to the entry under Applications for Child of light, right-click ChildofLight.exe and "Edit application fix")
- SAVE the database - either using the Max Payne guide's suggestions, or just save it as whatever and name it whatever you like.
- Right-click the database you renamed earlier, and click INSTALL

Now the game should run.

As noted in the guide, the compatibility layer will be in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Custom

I'd be curious if a .REG file could be exported and used in the future instead of all of this..?

Just wanted to say that this fix works (even though I'm on AMD system)!

Omfg YESSSS THIS IS THE FIX THANK YOU SO MUCHHH. I'm on an amd system ( cpu and gpu ) it looks a bit tedious but actually takes about a minute to do. Totally worth it to be able to play this game again.

Mine opens normally with this fix but when the menu opens it takes like 5 sec and it crashes :( didn't see any comments on this RIP I hate UPlay

Dear god, this works on my Ryzen 9! Had the game installed for about a year with constant crash on start screen. What a wonderful moment when the music played. Thanks!

Which is strange to me because this game seems like such a labour of love, just to be forgotten. In the beginning Steam wouldn't refund me either. Glad though now.

This got the game running for me, but unfortunately it tanked the FPS. Was getting 60fps prior to the game not working, and after applying this and getting it running I get 10-15fps. It's far too sluggish to push through.

EDIT: Followed all the suggestions here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/256290/discussions/0/558754898867851416/?ctp=2

...and still no dice. Runs like rubbish. Really don't get how I got 3 sessions out of this where it ran perfect, then it wouldn't launch and now runs like garbage without having initially changed anything.

It worked at my side, too. Thank you.
Hello, thanks, Ashes. It was this the problem (new hybrid multiple core CPU). Now it works like it did back in the day.
