Can Oculi disappear when character leaves party??

I equipped a character with Oculi that I spent A LOT of time crafting and when that character left my party they weren't put back in my inventory! Is this normal or a glitch?

I am bummed out, I spent so much time figuring out what I wanted and how to craft it. If this is going to happen again I will have to be careful.. I'm pretty far into the game so I don't think I will get enough gems to craft the brilliant oculi that I lost.. kinda stupid..

My memory of the game is fuzzy, but I don't think that oculi goes away, I played the game several times and I don't recall loosing anything.

Actually I feel silly now because the character that ''left'' my party was going to come back later which is why he kept the oculi I had given him.. but I didn't know that.
