Any fix or mod for the grass pop in?
Hi,

I just installed the Remastered version, all graphics settings on max with a Geforce 5090 (Windows 11, latest Geforce driver per 19.03.25). However, there is really bad grass pop in everywhere - like right in front of the player.

This is a strange oversight in an otherwise great looking game.

Is there any fix for this issue?

Thanks! :)

disabling screen space shadows helps a bit, but it also makes the game look worse, so I don't think it's worth it

I eventually got used to it :/

That might help a bit, but this is a texture/model pop-in issue - right in front of the player.

I've tried to look for a fix, but there doesn't seem to be one. Truly a baffling lack of QC from Sony here, as the rest of the game looks amazing. This pop-in issue hurts immersion a lot. Too bad.. :(

You should submit a ticket to Nixxes. At the top of the forums details the procedure to send to the dev team for the port since Sony didn't have anything top do with it.
I've noticed zero pop-ins for graphics of any kind in my 45+ hours of playing it. Sounds like something with your rig is busto. Maybe re-image and see if issue persists?

Sure? Can you try walking around in a forest with dense ground vegetation and grass, and see if you have abrupt LOD changes pop-in with ground textures for grass etc. right around you?

I see many people have the same issue as I have. Could you please tell me what graphics card you use? I didn't have this issue with the regular version of HZD, and all the settings in game are maxed out - clean installed graphics drivers too. There's no reason why it shouldn't work properly afaik.

Thanks!

Same. I have a 4080 Super and get the same thing with every setting maxed out. I tried the PS5 version and I don't see the same problem. Everything is blurrier on PS5 so maybe it's not as noticeable since on PC everything is super clear (4K DLAA). I kind of get used to it but sometimes it's really noticeable and immersion-breaking.

Thanks for the clarification. I see people have complained about this in the past, but Sony has failed to fix this with the patches that has been released. Kinda crazy, considering this is clearly some kind of major bug, or not intended feature.
Ok I rechecked on PS5 and after looking more carefully I noticed it's doing the same thing. I checked in both favor resolution and favor framerate mode. In some cases it was even worse than on PC. But it is more difficult to see if you don't really look for it because of the overall blurriness of the image.

edit: Also, if you play the game far away from a big TV it's less noticeable than if you're close to a TV/monitor.

Not sure it fixes the actual pop-in, but this tool can also increase lod distance, by default it's disabled, you have to edit mod_config.ini
Search for 'lod', it has its own section with descriptions what this or that string does.
It can also do many other useful things, like disable camera magnetism or pin it to the left shoulder (or is it right? It's called ForceLeftAlignedCamera, so I guess it's right?). Not to mention different cheat-level stuff like editing inventory stacks or spawning enemies. It can even quick save you in any place in the world or freeze or extend game time. Every option has a description in the ini, so you can easily see the scope of things it can do.

Funny thing is that I can't tell you if I ever enabled higher lods, I'm away from home right now, but I vaguely remember I toggled it...
Will edit the post when I actually check this. Mostly I use it to center camera behind Aloy.
But I don't actually see any pop-ins right under my nose. Or they're so fast or subtle, that I payed no attention to them. There're some distant lod changes, sure, I could even force them to trigger moving back and forth in certain parts of the world.

Edit.
Yes, I have it enabled with default suggested values. So I guess it helps then?
Can't say anything about performance impact, I have a 4090 and can even afford to run the game in 4k, but I'm fine with 1440p.

Thanks, this was very helpful. :) I have to download the game again, and try this out. Sounds just like what could work to fix it. I just got a 5090, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

I downloaded HZD again, installed the mod, and turned off LOD clamping in the Nvidia settings. I tried turning down the LOD bias, but it didn't make any difference.

It seems the vegetation on the ground will constantly flip to the highest quality asset directly in front of you, making very abrupt and noticeable LOD switching when running around.

This should be patched, but seems unlikely at this point. A shame really, as the previous standard version of HZD didn't have this issue.

Not really a fix but playing on my OLED tv it's much less noticeable than playing on my pc monitor. Probably because of the viewing distance and screen size. It's still there but much less pronounced.
