I never actually played the original version. One review at the time[adventuregamers.com] said there were "absolutely no changes to the gameplay content", but that "FMV movies are now larger and displayed in millions of colours, making them appear much richer than their counterparts in the original".
Playing the intro movies from the two versions in a standalone media player, it seems the vertical resolution was increased from 180 to 210 pixels. According to the "Making Of" movie included with some physical releases, the low resolution was the reason why they asked the actors to play their parts really over the top. They just wanted to make sure the emotions would still be visible in the final product.
