Luckily there is a game mechanic to skip puzzles if they seem unsolveable.
While having the map can make it go much faster, you don't need the map if you follow a general maze rule. Whenever presented with a choice of direction, ALWAYS pick the same direction and you will eventually find the exit. I tend to pick right, if you can't go right, you pick the right most choice, which in this case is straight.
The telescope is the most strenuous, though. The AI for that one is too good - you can't afford a single slip-up. As incredibly satisfying as it was to beat it, I don't think I'd have minded if it were just a little easier.
Overall I think I'd have to vote for the bishops as the toughest one.
The only reason the cans gave me trouble was the uncommon usage of tryst. The woman trying to arrange them is a sort of ♥♥♥♥♥ which gives you a clue to one of the words.
This game was just cursed by being cutting edge hardware and technical issues during filming that ripped one of the green screens causing really bad video on top of the required compression.
Yeah, I meant the microscope. I guess I didn't proofread my post carefully enough.
I agree, the telescope is very easy. It's not necessarily the first puzzle, though. I did the cake first (one of my favorites) and the spiders second.
But I started searching on dictionaries and encyclopaedias that helped me solve it back then.
I just love to play it again. To see what I still can remember or not B-) to get it solved once more.
almost every word ends in "y" and that's obvious from the number
there's only so many "L" so you know how many adverbs there are since few end in 'y' without having "L" before them.
The remaining letters are infrequent and there's a few 2 and 3 letter ones that are obvious based on the other available letters and ending in y.
The hardest part is the non modern usage of tryst. Its connotation wasn't solely sexual and can imply a specific time and place to meet (in this case the crypt as per when it's solved).
If you are all stumped by these puzzles wait until you play The 11th Hour!
