Different publishers, developers.
Different game engines.
Cities XXL is refreshing/continuation of a game series (City Life, Cities XL).
Cities: Skylines is new game, unless you could somehow relate it to Cities in Motion (which are rather city transportation simulations than a city builders).
Cities XXL will be available on Windows.
Cities: Skylines will be available on Windows, Linux, OSX.

You can't tell from the trailers? I can see the differences immediately. And if you ever pkayed Cities in Motion, you'd understand the feel for the game and why so many of us are excited for Skylines. http://www.pcgamer.com/cities-xxl-trailer-is-adamant-that-size-is-everything/

Found this

Cities: Skylines, Colossal Order's similarly promising, but less embiggened, game of metropolitan management and building placement.

Less Embiggened?

Leaving aside the question of whether that's really a word, what does it mean.

Vanilla Cities:Skylines will give you 36 km2 to play with. This is based on 9 of 25 tiles being unlocked during game play (Each tile is 2 km x 2 km).

Mods will be able to unlock all 25 tiles (if your computer can handle it) giving you 100 km2.

This is pretty close to the original Cities XL 110 km2.

So even in Vanilla mode Cities: Skylines will be 9 times bigger than Simcity 2013.

They are capping the population at 1000000 but that's actually 1000000 people not Simcities Fudge Factor population.

The other big plus is Workshop support for mods.

I like Cities XL, but it's more of a city designer than a city simulation, IMO. It looks a bit lifeless and there's little challenge in keeping all your citizens happy. But you can build quite impressive looking cities. Check out Auriga City on YouTube. What they do with Cities XXL I've no idea, but the developers have a chequered history promise wise.

I think Cities: Skylines will be more like what I wanted from SimCity 2013 and will be a real successor to SimCity 4. I also have faith in the developers although Cities in Motion 2 had some missteps from them.

End of the day, I'll probably get both because I love City Builders :-)

I will probably end up buying both, Cities Skylines and Cities XXL I'm sure will be absolutly outstanding! I agree I think Cities Skylines will be what everyone wants in a fun simulation of a city. Trust Me people will always find something to complain about just remember that

Cities: Skylines looks better overall. XXL looks like the same dead game we paid for years ago.
wolfgang_gruber Jan 15, 2015 @ 12:39pm
I wont buy Cities XXXL, I cant work with that engine, maybe its because of me, but I´m really into the CiM2 thing, I prefer their road building thing. (but it was hard to find out how that work at the beginning) Maybe I buy XXXL when its even cheaper, but 50% is not enough for me... äähh, no, I wont buy it because I wont have any time at all to look into the store because Skylines will be so fuc king awesome!
