Is this game good for kids?
I was wondering if the game features some free-play mode where you can just build what you want, with unlimited budget? And also if the interface is easy enough for a 7-8-year-olds to handle? Any of you have your kids playing and enjoying it? ;-)

There is a built in "mod" by the devs for unlimited money and one for having everything unlocked. Just go into the mods section to activate them.

yup, with mods it shouldn't be an issue

well, this game does involve some stragety type things, like to place houses. if your kids want something where they can build whatever they want whenever, this may not be the best game. because there is a demand system for commercial, residential and industrial. this means that when things like industrial aren't in demand, your kids can't make industrial buildings.
the only games i can think of that may be cool for your kids could be roblox, idk.

watch some gameplay of this game first, that way you can learn how it works and decide whether your kids may or may not like it.

I'd go get them a game like Green City- this is probably a bit much for a 8 yr old. But with your help...yeah

It's true that you can enable mods for money. And the interface should be easy enough to handle for a 7 year old. You just have to know that the game itself is much deeper than just building stuff. This is relevant because a 7 year old won't always be able to understand why the houses he built get demolished and abondened or how to handle a traffic jam.
I don't want to throw you into the jungle of modifications, but maybe you should check out the workshop for some Intersections, though there are a few default ones.
Anyways give it a try. You can spend hours ingame just watching and as it isn't competetive in any way, you will find a friendly community to help you out. Even if you won't play it, it definately is worth the money.

I'm not sure what fun a young child would have from a city builder. Why not get a game that's made for very young children.

Yeah, there are mods which allow free builiding and endless money.
I'm sure kids will have fun with it. They might need your help with some things, so if you want to play together, the game would be great. I've heard of parents who play it together with their kids. For them to play it alone at that age may be frustrating at some point, since there are some aspects a kid might not understand or know yet which are required to run your town successfully.

It should be fine with the mod for unlimited money. It's good to show how power/water works though, pipes, etc.

Get your kid Oregon Trail - much better.

Always remember that if you use the Mods they won't get the achievements, not a big thing but useful to keep in mind.

Hard to say. Defintetly not for playing it alone. If an older persons play with them together helping out here and there maybe. Game usability is easy but the mechanic for achieving a good city isn''t. While watching some twitch streams I have the feeling that not even many grown ups seem to understand how traffic works and compared to other city builders road design is quite important here.

I first played the original simcity when it released in 1989 (I was about 8 at the time). I fell in love with it immediately. Still one of my favourite games to this day. It sparked my interest in building which has stayed with me my whole life. So much so that i now work in structural engineering for a living...lol...If I could handle that game at a young age I'm sure your child will be fine with playing this with a bit of help from tutorials or some guides or youself ;)

This game is a bit easier than the old simcitys aswell(imo), although he may spit the dummy at the traffic which is pretty well simulated..lol :)

Thanks for your answers. Yes, I know there's more to this game than just placing buildings and roads, but a kid must start somewhere not to steep. I remember me "playing" Sim City by placing a few blocks and roads, waiting for them do grow a bit and then calling Godzilla... I don't expect my kid to build a huge city and maintain it properly, but from what you write, I'm sure he will have fun *just* building and maybe he'll catch up with the mechanics after some time. Playing together is also an option, why not.

I was expecting all kind of "get X instead" answers and I appreciate the suggestions, but I don't see why it should be "instead" and not both. ;-)

Agree 100%, buy them all! :D

Oh, I would give a suggestion of stonehearth aswell as a great game you and your kid can play together.

You should have your flesh torn from your body, dipped in tar and then flogged publicly.

I grew up on Simcity 2000 - I was a capable mayor before I started primary school...
