I bought and have played Cities: Skylines for more than 230 hours since it was released
almost a month ago... and have no plans on stopping anytime soon.
That kinda says it all right there ;)
Get Cities: Skylines.
I am so telling your boss!!
Simcity 5 has better graphics and in my opinion better simulation because of things that skylines do not have:
1) day and night cycle + natural disaster
2) the sims have a daily routine, going to work shopping going to school, so there are peak hours and stuff. Skylines don't. People take days to get to work and back home lol.
3) natural resources actually has a function other than generating money.
4) the cities of tomorrow expansion pack makes your city look very futuristic and awesome
However skylines does alot of things that simcity does wrong
1) there are more flexibility in designing your traffic and public transport, you can freakin design your routes!
2) your city is much larger
3) traffic is less stressful
4) there is a sense of progression as you unlock buildings... simcity offers this too but i feel that this game does it better at least slightly.
Both games however are buggy. Although this game is not that buggy but it can be annoying someitmes. The most annoying one is the mass deathwaves lol.
CSL has:
1. Larger cities (well it's a large city with districts if you choose to have them).
2. Fun to play
3. In many ways like Simcity 4
4. Well done game
5. Lots of Mods and Assets
Simcity:
1. Fun to play
2. Small cities which everyone complained about
3. More in depth specializations which are fun (or at least very fun imo)
4. Disasters which are cool
I enjoy both games. I played Simcity over 1300 hours. I've played this one around 125 I believe now. This game is pretty awesome.
This pretty much sums up my thoughts too. To me the biggest difference is that SimCity has more in-depth simulation and micromanagement on almost every aspect of the gameplay. You spend more time "polishing" what you already built. Cities: Skylines is focused more around building a large city and setting up a good traffic and public transportation network.
It really depends on what type of gameplay you prefer. I have enjoyed both games equally, but for different reasons. In the long run, you're better off with this game simply because native mod and asset support can take this game in so many directions.
