Big drop in demand
Hi,
This after noon I had a healthy city with about 110K people in it. Then I left the computer for a while and when I came back I noticed that more than half the stores were gone and on some industrial estates most industy had gone to. Economy plumeted from +30k a month to -10k a month. Most of the remaining stores indicates no goods to sell and some factories indicate not enough buyers. Ah, you think, a classic example of what happens when you have massive traffic jams. But I havn't. There are barely any red areas indicating heavy traffic at all in the entire city.

Anyone else encountered this?

In the image below youcan see an industrial area next to a part of the town with recidence areas and shops. Notice how the shops have almost vanished and the ones that are left does not stock up. How can the industry producing goods not connect to the shopping areas that sell goods?

Any ideas appreciated!

Cheers,
/M

Add: Is it posible to import to much goods so that the industry in the city is outcompeted?

I'd suggest building a cargo port and train stations for import/exporting. I don't know how the zoned buildings decide how they get their imports (inside versus outside connections), but having those options will give them a place to trade goods.

I have a city of 150K, and I've yet to see my commercial and industry complain about these things.

Hi,
Thanks for your thoughts. Unfortunately I already have two train cargo terminals and four cargo sea ports.

I am wondering if my oil and ore resources depleted causing a sudden drop in the industry? I noticed that others have encountered this.

I am posting a picture of the drop in demand.

I tried running a city with only highly educated citizens and offices instead of industry, but commercial always complained of not having goods to sell, despite having ample opportunities to import through cargo trains and harbors.

I've also noticed that cities tend to get kinda weird at higher populations. Zoned areas start taking much longer to get used, even when the demand is high.

I seem to have the oposite problem, i.e. that my offices are working but most industry and commercial plots are vacant. There is no supply and no demand (Notice the vacant industry and commercial plots below).

All my city is zoned in order to use the policies on the different types of areas. Thanks I'll have a look at that.

Cheers,

I am 100% sure that it is unemployment. You NEED to have work very close to your residential areas for them to work. Alternatively, you can have good trasport to the work areas. Hope that helps!! it worked for me. And yes, this will fix demand for all RCI (residential commercial industrial) EDIT: also make sure residential is close to commercial like REALLY close

Thanks! I have been wondering myself how far away the different types of areas can be and still work.

I have tried to work with the unemployment angle to get things working again, but no change so far. I noticed that the commercial demand has plumeted equally across the city, even in areas were recidencial areas, industrial and commercial areas are really close ( see picture below). If it were unemployment, would not these areas of the city still work fine? (there are plenty of bus lines and metros that connect the buildings in the picture)

Hi,

The demandsituation has not started to sort it self so here is an update on what I did. To be honest though, I can't say for sure what precis thing that fixed it but what I did was:

- I added three more cargo terminal ports and two more train cargo terminals. In relation to these things I sorted traffic around the ports so that it flows well.

- I also added two train stations for people trains.

- I also followed the unemployment route (employment has sunken from about 95% to around 80%) and added more buslines and metro lines to connect recidential areas with industry and commercial areas.

- I also deselected all workshop assets I am using to make sure none of those did something they were not supposed to.

Looking att the change in the graph something out of those actions had a good effect :)

Maybe the problem was created by a deathwave? Didn't you have one at that time?
KaykaysNL Apr 4, 2015 @ 6:37pm
from what i can see here is that you have way to much commerce for that zone, so probably the passenger influx from the trains helped alot

for any zone to work without help from the outside try and keep this ratio 35% industry/office 55% residential 10% commerce
