Can't see zoning overlay when placing new zones
I'm just getting started, but I'm having trouble zoning areas. When I select the zoning tools, I can't see any grid or overlay indicating zones or brush size/type. The panels pop up that let me choose brush/zone, but there's nothing on the map indicating what zones are set.

Is there some layer I need to turn on? Is this a rendering issue? Sometimes it looks like there's a grid, but it's clipped through the top of the screen. Thanks in advance for the help.

You set the zones on the grid. The grid extends four boxes out from any roads you have laid down.

The grids you can zone will ONLY show up where you have placed roads (Not highways). So, if you make a road, a grid will show up with it indicating where you can zone your things.

Yeah, I built roads but don't see any grids. I can blindly zone things using fill mode, and buildings will grow. I just can't actually tell what areas are zoned as without the grid.

Did you ever get this solved? I've got the same problem...

Are you using mods such as NoPillars or Road Anarchy? If so, make sure they are running in Collide mode, not Overlap mode.

No mods here, but I am on Ubuntu Linux and AMD graphics. Maybe it's related to that?

I cannot zone due to no zoning grids next to my roads. Not sure if its mod related, but I can't play the game if I can't place buildings or allow for zones to grow. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you tried without mods? Use the --noWorkshop launch option and start a new map.

Edit: I see you have 850 hours in game and are in game right now. Did the problem suddenly appear (assuming you didn't spend 850 hours trying to zone) and was it solved already?

Have any of your mods / assets been updated recently? Check on the Workshop tab - choose "Subscribed Items" in the sidebar (the "Your files" pop-up menu) and then choose "Date Updated" in the sidebar.

After some troubleshooting, I found for me, it was specific to a map I had created--As I tried other maps the girds were present. It is unfortunate not to be able to play my custom designed map , but at least 'the game is still playable'.. Hope this helps you all, enjoy.

P.s. completely making a new map worked.. the grids work. I'm unsure as to why this wasn't the case on the first attempt?!?... I will periodically save my map and test it to see if it occurs again and at what point.

[Edit: After further investigation, I have found that for me the specific cause was not building within the starting area or rather not specifying one while mods were enabled, 81 tiles to be exact.]

Solution: Disable mod(s) > go to map editor > select starting tile > save > enable mod > play game > buy tiles, even starting tile.
