Edit: I see you have 850 hours in game and are in game right now. Did the problem suddenly appear (assuming you didn't spend 850 hours trying to zone) and was it solved already?
After some troubleshooting, I found for me, it was specific to a map I had created--As I tried other maps the girds were present. It is unfortunate not to be able to play my custom designed map , but at least 'the game is still playable'.. Hope this helps you all, enjoy.
P.s. completely making a new map worked.. the grids work. I'm unsure as to why this wasn't the case on the first attempt?!?... I will periodically save my map and test it to see if it occurs again and at what point.
[Edit: After further investigation, I have found that for me the specific cause was not building within the starting area or rather not specifying one while mods were enabled, 81 tiles to be exact.]
Solution: Disable mod(s) > go to map editor > select starting tile > save > enable mod > play game > buy tiles, even starting tile.
