Another example, the "Sky Train" in Düsseldorf (Airport):

Or in Mannheim (very interesting, too, if you take a look at the structure. But it doesn't exist nomore):

You see, that all examples above were built in different ways to use it in the end like in Wuppertal. I think it would be looks very nice between the full streets, skyscrapers and trains in our towns. Use stations over the street, build it under bridges, over bridges...

And a cool thing is, if you build just a line from A to B in your town (like the real one) you don't need a rail switch in front of the station like the trains have. It changes the side in a really sharp curve on both ends:

The game engine show us, that the tools for building streets and railways works very well. So, why not using for a Schwebebahn/Overhead railway? :-)
This reminds me of the similar thing used in the film 'Fahrenheit 451', where they used a French version called SAFAGE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAFEGE
The SAFAGE, that you've seen is the same thing as in the link above from Düsseldorf. And as you can see on wikipedia behind your link, there are more like this in france and japan.
I've taken a look in the internet for Cities in Motion 2 to see what exactly you mean..... and after a few pictures, i found this:

That shows, that it works^^
