Question about city builder games?
Unlike games like Tropico, you don't actually place most individual building (RCI) and rotate it to your liking aka Sims 2 but instead just zone an area and the building build themselves? I never played Simcity 2000 or 3000 so I don't know what the gameplay on those games were like?

This game unlike tropico feel more like macro management than micro management. I also like to add sign post, trash can, and other cosmetic makeup similar to Sims 2.

So my question is was "zoning" something that happen in all city building games?

As far back as Simcity the 1st, the good one, not the one that rightfully got many worthless game devs fired from Maxis.
sim city 4 is the best city builder still.. and there it also works with zones

i prefer this kind over tropico in terms of long time gameplay

in this city builders you more concentrate on infrastructure and roads than buildings

Could you explain more on how zoning work in Simcity 4?

I didn't play Tropico 4 for long cause it became very tedious but I would like the option to place individual building so more choice for the players.

Pretty basic...you have small "tiles" or squares if you will, preset by the game.
When you drag a zone over X number of Tiles/Squares, the game randomly put down buildings, each building have different amount of Tiles/Squares required to be built and mostly placed where it can fit first.

Then other factors get included such as Land value and several different buildings can "merge" in order to build a higher level building.

It´s way easier to actually play and see how it works instead of trying to explain it :)..

Placing every building manually do give more choice for the players, but keep in mind that Tropico in all it´s glory is a rather small sized game...In this game and Sim City your cities will have thousands upon thousands of buildings, and placing everyone manually would destroy your brain....or if you want to create a city where every building looks the same..

Also Zoning is the basic method used by City builders, anything else is just original ideas implented into games...Zoning is the standard usage :)

this zones are only for industry economy and living area... you still have plenty of buildings you can place single
To answer your question - Yes. Zoning has pretty much been the standard since the dawn of city builders. :)
You had to work it to zone in a way you wanted in SC4. C:S has better zoning tools. You can easily paint 1 tile house beach front property with C:S tools.

All in all the zoning in C:S is pretty good. I hope we get buildings with at least an 8 x 8 grid in the future though.

I like to place all mod asset (not just public service) to my liking so for example I can choose where to place my In-N-Out burger, macdonald, and starbucks coffee. Or place certain modded residential asset (house) in certain area, just more freedom to micro manage.

Well, that has never really been part of this genre. That is more like Tropico series for sure. You are the mayor, you are not really concerned with minor building permits.

believe it or not tropico is very limited compared to C:S in terms of individual bulid.
just try it at best

I see and good to know! I think sometime the game is too easy because it realistic for example you only need 1 police station to cover a huge area whereas in games like Simcity series, you have multiple police station (unless i'm wrong) so you get to place more buildings.

Regarding zoning, C:S has the greatest zoning tool in any city builder game and even though I don't play many, I have watch other play. I think it so simple and intuitive that sometime I miss the challenge of hard placement but those could come with mods and what not.

Yup, I know. I am no longer a fan of Kalypso after T5. :) Not quite the hate fest I have for EA, but real close.
