You can do 2 things to fix it.
1) Make sure cargo and passenger lines are independent. of each other.
2) Put a train station on the map edge and terminate it. Put a small road to another train station next to it, and connect your cities train line to that.
What will happen is the train coming from outside will drop its cargo off, trucks will carry it the short distance to the new train station you built, and the cargo will get delivered to your other train stations. They wont get backed up off the map because they can't leave the map.
This guide helped me fix it.

Any train that doesn't need to stop at the station goes around it. It also works at junctions

As every station tend to send their own trains, the more stations the more trains will add to your network.
I would like to be able to make 4 tracks, 6 tracks railways, be able to plop a "track changer" on any long enough segment of railway to permit trains go from a track to another.
I would like to be able to add as many railway tracks as I want, to an existing railway station (cargo or passenger), the passenger one would automatically add the platforms, the cargo trains would automatically choose an empty slot to load/unload their cargo, while the transport panel would allow us to choose which train line goes to which platform by dragging the train stop.
I would like a merge of metro and trains.

I found that guide previously and it was extremely helpful in stepping up my train management game. If you haven't read it, do so. Despite utilizing that guide, I was still having issues with trains stacking up leaving my city until I stopped allowing outside passenger trains into my city. I created paired passenger stations at the edge of my map. One to receive external passengers and return the trains to the outside world immediately, and another across the street that was linked to my internal passenger network.
Pardon my MS Paint skills but I am at work with no access to the game, so here is the simplified version of my external network and the transfer stations:
- the external network stays to the outside of my map and simply links the outside entry points. MSPaint Example #1[i.imgur.com]
- transfer stations next to entry points. MS Paint Example #2[i.imgur.com]
An extra tip, which I only recently learned myself, was how to create a crosswalks not at an intersection. Change a section of your street from either tree-lined or grass-lined, to basic, or vice versa. This will create a crosswalk at the border between the street types. This is also helpful when connecting paths on opposite sides of a street, rather than creating an elevated pathway across the road. It uses much less space.
Edit: To be honest, I'm not sure why this fixed the issue for me. I'm assuming since the external passenger trains had fewer locations to pick up from, there were less being sent. I believe there still is an issue with how the game handles trains reaching the edge of the map.

these are perfect for problems like the one you describe. The good thing i observed with these crosswalks; they do not slow the cars to zero but only to about the half speed with many cims crossing (Two full metros at the same time). This is just for convenience, I am a lazy person so I created these to just paste them.

Est ce que tu veux dire , si je comprends bien, qu'il ne sert à rien de multiplier les gares afin de désengorger les embouteillages de trains, mais au contraire de limiter leur nombre?
Merci
