Does anyone else have a problem with trains leaving the city stacking up?

I'm not sure what I can do about it, other than limiting my train depot activity in the city, which seems like a bummer of a constraint.

Yeah the fact the trains enter and leave through a single entry is a bummer. The only work around is to go to the edge of the map and scatter the tracks into a web so they have multiple ways around.

Yeah, this is a real problem. Its one thing to have a perfect, not too large train transportation system, then be super limited by the stacking up that's occurring outside of the city borders that you can't do anything about. Currently in my city of only 5 tiles (22,000 residents) I have 38 trains stacked up which is now affecting my inter city transportation system of the two train stations I have between downtown and the suburbs. Major problem.

My city is 250k people and I was having the problem of trains getting backed up on the edge of the map.

You can do 2 things to fix it.

1) Make sure cargo and passenger lines are independent. of each other.
2) Put a train station on the map edge and terminate it. Put a small road to another train station next to it, and connect your cities train line to that.

What will happen is the train coming from outside will drop its cargo off, trucks will carry it the short distance to the new train station you built, and the cargo will get delivered to your other train stations. They wont get backed up off the map because they can't leave the map.

This guide helped me fix it.

Thanks for the train-shuttle tip, that seems like it will work, but also seems like a major kludge that could be handled by the game's "off map" logic.

Same issue here. You can have an ideal railway system in your city, but you still have to connect to the existing tracks going outside of your borders and that's where trains won't despawn fast enough.

I found that building a junction with a track that slips round each station works wonders for congestion.

Like this

Any train that doesn't need to stop at the station goes around it. It also works at junctions

Indeed - never, ever build a station on a line. Ever.

And to add to all what has been said, you could even use the transfer from station to station even in inner lines, so you may not clog your full inner network should you be a bit crazy like me on using cargo stations... That way you divide your final full map in maybe 3 or 4 inner networks
As every station tend to send their own trains, the more stations the more trains will add to your network.

Yup - multiple lines is key. I do hope someone works out how to do multi-line platforms soon

That would save a lot of ground room for sure ;-)

I have the same issue, here is my idea :

I would like to be able to make 4 tracks, 6 tracks railways, be able to plop a "track changer" on any long enough segment of railway to permit trains go from a track to another.

I would like to be able to add as many railway tracks as I want, to an existing railway station (cargo or passenger), the passenger one would automatically add the platforms, the cargo trains would automatically choose an empty slot to load/unload their cargo, while the transport panel would allow us to choose which train line goes to which platform by dragging the train stop.

I would like a merge of metro and trains.

I found that guide previously and it was extremely helpful in stepping up my train management game. If you haven't read it, do so. Despite utilizing that guide, I was still having issues with trains stacking up leaving my city until I stopped allowing outside passenger trains into my city. I created paired passenger stations at the edge of my map. One to receive external passengers and return the trains to the outside world immediately, and another across the street that was linked to my internal passenger network.

Pardon my MS Paint skills but I am at work with no access to the game, so here is the simplified version of my external network and the transfer stations:
- the external network stays to the outside of my map and simply links the outside entry points. MSPaint Example #1[i.imgur.com]
- transfer stations next to entry points. MS Paint Example #2[i.imgur.com]

An extra tip, which I only recently learned myself, was how to create a crosswalks not at an intersection. Change a section of your street from either tree-lined or grass-lined, to basic, or vice versa. This will create a crosswalk at the border between the street types. This is also helpful when connecting paths on opposite sides of a street, rather than creating an elevated pathway across the road. It uses much less space.

Edit: To be honest, I'm not sure why this fixed the issue for me. I'm assuming since the external passenger trains had fewer locations to pick up from, there were less being sent. I believe there still is an issue with how the game handles trains reaching the edge of the map.

The crosswalks are a good tip, though, I have found that with enough "pedestrian pressure" (i.e. two 600 passenger per week metro stations across a street from each other), that pedestrians will also jaywalk.

these are perfect for problems like the one you describe. The good thing i observed with these crosswalks; they do not slow the cars to zero but only to about the half speed with many cims crossing (Two full metros at the same time). This is just for convenience, I am a lazy person so I created these to just paste them.

Est ce que tu veux dire , si je comprends bien, qu'il ne sert à rien de multiplier les gares afin de désengorger les embouteillages de trains, mais au contraire de limiter leur nombre?
Merci
