Is roundabout overrated?
I believe the current fad of using using roundabout as the end all answers to every traffic problem is over blown.

The advantage of the roundabouts are the it does not use traffic lights, however, I see several issues when using them in my city:

1. Since cars tends to choose a lane long before making a turn, the roundabout techically forces every car to drive on the right lane no matter how wide the street is. I saw this time and again in my cities that I have to create one way bypasses so cars can make a proper left turn.

2. To take advantage of roundabout's no traffic lights feature, roundabouts can only use one lane one way road. Since six lane one way road will generate traffic light, there really is no way to upgrade a roundabout once it is full of cars.

3. Even if there is no traffic light, there are still stop signs. And busy roundabout means cars has to stop at each right turn anyway.

Am I missing something here?

i use round about only becuase if the mods i have and they work fairly well
Hey cool! that was my asset. The full diamond intersection. I'm glad you liked it shadowwolf.

So, predictably, I'm anti-roundabout. Roundabouts aren't ever used as high-volume interchanges IRL (except in England, I don't know what their deal is) for the same reason they aren't that great in the game. They have weaving, with entering and exiting traffic interfering with each other. A major junction should never have this. "The Beast" can handle a lot of traffic, but a stack interchange can handle as much traffic as you can pump into it, and its smaller, cheaper, and faster.

I remember The Beast came out when the game was first released, and it worked better than a cloverleaf. But since then there are plenty of higher volume assets that have been created.

What they are good for is for is as a replacement for traffic lights where moderate volume surface streets intersect. Which is what they should be used for in the game too. If you don't want to run traffic in phases, and you don't have the room or money for fly-over ramps, then roundabout it is, but they will clog up. IRL they also are useful for purposefully slowing traffic and keeping collisions at low angles, reducing traffic fatalities.

I think too often roundabouts are used as a quick "good enough" solution to difficult traffic problems, because creating real interchanges is just incredibly hard, particularly where they're really odd and complicated. But I guarantee you, there is always a better solution.

I have to disagree, whenever someone makes a thread they run a chance of being told to use the search function instead. Seen it so many times. So basically to the self proclaimed forum police, users shouldn't make new threads or post in old ones. Basically, you want users to not use the forums at all. Or you could just, you know, stop telling people what to do.

Damned if you do, damned if you don´t,

That´s internet for you.

On topic, Roundabouts have been proven to work if done correctly, the nay sayers and those who claim its a space waster are the ones that creates threads such as "Are traffic fixed yet" :)

Roundabouts work ridiculously easily because the cims are all some of the best drivers in the world, merging through multiple lanes of traffic at 100kph is no problem for those guys.

You can do even better than roundabouts, jsut replace your motorway intersections with these, it works fine:
