IMac i5 16GB 512MB Radeon 6670 Performance Issues
Question - I've been playing in my iMac i5 with 16gb Ram and a Radio 6670 512MB video card. I have all the settings down to low and running windowed 1600x900. It runs okay at best. The only out of spec thing is in running OSX Lion.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or could this be because of Lion? I'm avoiding upgrading due to Adobe CS4 incompatibilities

My OS is the reason I haven't bought Cities Skylines yet. I'm upgrading soon (And going to throw myself into the same problems with CS4 as yourself... joy). For what it's worth, a lot of people are reporting that fresh installs of CS4 fix a lot of the problems, but I understand if it's what you do for work, you value stability over the latest updates, I'm the same way, but I think I'm finally ready to make the leap to Yosemite soon.

I dont know much about macs and honestly dont think they are built for gaming but maybe im wrong. But i can tell you your graphics card is pretty weak.

They aren't really meant for gaming at all. Really the only difference between Mac and PC now is the OS, Mac uses proprietary connections, and the screens. Macs adopted ATI and Intel years ago. You basically pay through the nose for an inferior gaming rig if you buy a Mac.

Top-of-the-line Macs are OK enough for gaming (But probably not good enough for most serious gamers), and surprisingly, it seems that it's more of a software problem than a hardware one. For example, I have a top-of-the-line iMac (Quad core i7, 32GB RAM, 4GB video), and it runs games decently in Mac OS. When I boot into Windows, my FPS performance is significantly increased. I don't really know too much about the technology behind all of this, but Windows is all DirectX and Mac uses OpenGL--and I hear it uses an outdated version or something. I'm a pretty casual gamer and prefer my Mac for working, but when I want to get into a game, Windows is the only way to go...

Guys can we not turn this into a Mac vs PC discussion, if you don't have an answer to the OP, take it somewhere else. Have some manners, thanks.

For anyone else having this problem, I did find a good work around. Originally I tried running the game full screen 1600x900, but it still lagged. If I reduced the actual desktop resolution down to 1600x900 and then ran the game full screen, performance was good.

While 2560x1400 is the default resolution on my desktop, the ATI card w/ 512MB can't seem to handle rendering desktop + game. Reducing it down seems to be the trick here. Hope this helps someone else out there!

Unsurprisingly the Mac vs PC discussion IS the answer to OPs question in the first place. He has an ancient graphics card compared to the norm these days. It's not much stronger than the bare minimum of Intel HD chips (which aren't even officially supported)

Also - Khumprp is on to something. Skylines runs in a window, so you'll still be using your Desktop resolution no matter what your game is set to - which means higher memory usage.

I've got also the i5 with 8gb Ram and a Radio 6670 512MB . I play with grafics all high and it plays like hell, so much better then f.i. TrainFever. I run my MAC on OSX Mavericks. so no problems here.

Just curious, iMac 27"? or other system? Trying to determine if it's the resolution or something else on my system causing the lag.

And for what it's worth, I primarily game on my Alienware laptop. I use the Mac for work and to play with my daughter. Much easier for her to see the big screen.

No it's a iMac 21 late 2011 but I always upgrade to the latest OS. These are specs:
Processor 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5

Geheugen 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Videokaart AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB

OK, makes sense so far. The resolution on the 21" (correct me if I'm wrong) is 1920x1080, whereas on the 27" it's 2560x1440. I'm going to try to drop my desktop resolution fown to 1920x1080 to mimic your setup and see what happens.

If anyone out there is running on the 27" iMac, I'd love to see what their experiences are.

I have a 27" maxed out iMac Retina. I get a constant 30fps at native resolution (2560x1440). If I increase the internal resolution using Dynamic Resolution mod, my frame rate decreases dramatically to 10-15fps, which is understandable. The game runs great when it launches, i've got sun flares and ambient occlusion cranked up. But for some reason it takes nearly 5 full minutes to launch the game. Beach ball spins on the Paradox logo forever.

Also, custom building areen't loading. I have a bunch downloaded and enabled, but they aren't appearing int he game. The parks from the workshop seem to be working, however only the placeholder image is visibe in the selectgor pop-up

Odd. Mine loads right up, but not that good of performance. Part of me wonders if, since I'm not running the latest OSX, if the video drivers are outdated ( EFI Driver Version: 01.00.544).

Would you mind checking what version you have?

ofc it wont run at 1440p with a 512mb ram gpu... you're lucky it's even running... the os has nothing to do with it
