Water Pipes and Power Lines
Does anybody actually enjoy the tedious process of laying power lines, and water mains? Simcity 4 had that and in Simcity 2013 the water, and power when under city streets which makes more sense. Hopefully someone creates a workshop item for this.

Well, it could have some additional gameplay to it, like having to deal with line breaks, pipe bursts and such, leaving districts without water/power temporarily, or something like that. But the way it was in SC4 - I agree, it is purely cosmetic and should not require player action.

You can have pipe bursts if you have them going through the street. I hate the micromanagement. forgetting to add a water pipe to places suck.

From what I've seen, power is passed small distances from building to building - you only need pylons to link up areas over larger distances. You're correct, however, that mains pipes need to be manually placed and cover a limited area.

I do wonder how moddable the game will be. Cities In Motion 2 only really allowed for modified maps I believe - though the skylines FAQ[www.skylinescity.com] does explicitly mention the ability to create buildings too, so that's already an improvement. Hopefully we'll get a lot opened up to us, allowing some really detailed mods.
Yes, I enjoyed it.

how is this micromanagement?
its the basics of building a city
and ye simcity had that, but this isnt simcity,
well see how it goes when we can actually play it..

I didn't mind in SC3000... and power lines are kind of a must for city planing. Water lines not so much yea the street should incorporate it.

I like it.

Oh, hell yes! I loved it.

Umm, not only it's the basis of building a city, but if water and power "travelled" under the roads, it would immediately mean that there would have to be the same obligation as in SC13 (quite stupid obligation in my opinion) that every building needs to be connected to a road. That's not realistic at all, think of the winter turbines or whatever. I think it'd be far more tedious to build roads connecting my power plants and water pumps and my city together with roads (which are expensive in this manner). In SC13 it was, well, reasonable, because the laughable map area didn't allow even a dream of wind turbines (or water pumps) far from the actual city.
Btw, in reality, infrastructure like power and water systems are built similarly to what you can find here. :)

theres nothing stopping you from connecting power lines and water mains to roads. but most water pipes are under roads. Thats why roads have manholes, to do maintinence on pipes and stuff. Also the way you do pipes in this game is not realistic the way you like to believe. in real life a pipe has to connected to every single house. water, and sewage. This game, if the building is within distance of the unrealistic water main then it has water. That makes no sense. Busier roads will also carry big water mains while smaller roads will carry smaller ones for obvious reasons. In this game all pipes are the same size. Wherever you get this dream world of "this is more realistic" is absolute nonsense.

If you take it this way, then pipes and power lines under the roads are not realistic either because of the same reasons you said yourself. and because it's not always under them and main pipes or power lines are by far not under roads when it comes to long distance carrying.
I think it's more realistic to have main power lines and pipes where the heck I want (and imagine that within the given distance from the pipe/line buildings get connected to it automatically) than to be mandatorily limited to roads only.

its almost rare to have a building not connected to a road. extremely rare, and in the country alot of people have well water, not city water. I never said get rid of pipes, I said have them under roads. If you for some odd reason need to connect water and power to some weird remote place not connected to road then you can connect a pipe from the road. civilized people put them under roads so they can man them(using a manhole.) idk where you live but if you have pipes sticking every which where then you need a new city planner.

Haha :D Okay, now I see more properly where you're going, but I just really disliked the forced simplifying which was present in the SC13. I mean, building of the power lines and pipelines seems to me as a representation of building an actual infrastructure. But I can understand that somebody doesn't enjoy being in charge of really everything... I guess if there's gonna be more people with the same opinion, someone surely will do a mod which will place the water lines automatically under the roads (perhaps at a higher cost? that'd be reasonable). Now I think it's a little bit late to demand such radical change to the game ;)

Please keep the need to lay high voltage power lines and water mainlines between city centers.

If you look at any maps of real cities. There are high voltage power lines running from generator plants to the city centers in every case. It just would not look right without them.

As for water lines..... The way it has been implemented looks fine to me. Like for the power lines. The source of the clean water is most often located away from city centers and must be piped in.

lol G-Spotter don't comment unless you actually read the thread.
