Cities: Skylines
Metro Line vs Train Line
Whats the difference betweeen those two? Wheres the advantage of a train line? (I'm not talking about the cargo trains)

Advantages Metro:
- Station is smaller
- creates less noise
- lines are underground and dont take up space

Advantages Train:
- slightly higher capacity (240 instead of 180)
- ?

Do I miss something that makes building train lines worth it?

Trains can also transport cargo.
Trains run faster, cost less
As far as upkeep for infrastructure: Metro costs less for the infrastructure, and also has the advantage of being easy to place.

As far as running costs, I'm not entirely sure, but my own experience is that metro is cheaper and, because it's easy to have good coverage, also brings in more cash.
Just checked ingame. Upkeep is 4 times higher for train stations (rail upkeep is also slightly higher) and Station cost is also 3 times higher.

True, looks like trains run a bit faster when they are on a straight rail. So you could use them more for big distances and everything thats less than 2km or so is for metros.
The train is ideally for long distance while metro is short distance. This is reflective of how real life is actually.

Metro's extend outside of the city center for about 10-15 miles or 16 - 24 km. While trains will extend for hundreds of miles/km.
I only use Trains for cargo, using trains for CiM cost more than its worth, since you have to plan ahead where the station will be, and/or sacrafice alot of structures to have a train track in middle of your nice looking city.

The carry potential of them both, i have to say both are similar, trains go faster..but since this game dont use clock system for CiM´s to be on time for work, it dont matter how long it takes them from A to B, so long they dont use the car and stop traffic more.
Since both Trains and Metro are used only to ease the load on the traffic.
I use trains for long distances (not stopped by constant stops), I only really use metro in high density areas to reduce their load burdern on the buses (short distances that all link up to a train station
Advantages Train:
- Not a nightmare to cross rivers with
I think that trains will also bring tourists into your city, if the rails are connected to the outside world :)
yes, trains can go out of your city, subways can not. But there is still a bug where totaly empty trains from outside block your whole train net. The amount of tourists is nearly not existing. so right now, you should not connect passenger trains to the outside.

It's not about distance, it's about the balance between land availability and cost. In many large cities, the 'metro' is really just the underground element of an extensive rail system, as it is impractical to build a surface network through the most built up areas of a city. Surface rail is far cheaper, which is why it is often used in surburbs, and 'metro' in denser areas.

We really should've been able to combine the systems, and there's no way the metro should be cheaper.
Agreed, we should be able to combine them. In this game, I find trains incredibly bad for transporting passengers among different districts. They're OK for cargo though. Cargo trucks can cause massive traffic jams, so anything to keep cargo off the roads is good.

The metro is incredibly good in this game. I use it as soon as I can.

Trains bring in tourists, and they are fun to watch. :) One day they will give us combined stations.
Yep maybe the ability to combine them or the ability to build the metro on the surface. And if you build it overground then it costs less. Then we would have an over- and underground metro, like many cities have.

And then the train will stay for itself and it should be less expensive. So it would be better to use it for large distances.
That would be awesome.
