Editing existing maps ?
Hi !
I wondered if there was any hidden way to edit the original maps in the map editor ? I'm not really a full map maker, but I'd like to just change a few things for fun, is that possible, and if not, is it something we may do in the future ?

In the application folder find the Resources/Files/Maps folder. Depending on your OS this may be in a protected directory. You'll see all the maps included with the game: NorthEurope1FINAL.crp, etc.

Copy, /DO/NOT/MOVE/, these files to your addon map folder. Again the location will vary by OS but the end of the chain should be Cities_Skylines/Maps. If you don't know where this folder is on your OS, make a map in the Map Editor, just a blank square will do, save it with a unique name (make sure to check "Publish Map in New Game Panel"), and then search for that file.

Once you have copies of the base game maps you can load them in the Map Editor and export the height maps. DO NOT save them with the same names. In fact, as soon as you copy them from the application folder to your own data folder change the names. The dangers here are: 1) The game not finding a file where it expects it, and 2) The game finding two or more different files with the same name. If you cannot find the correct folders on your own, you probably shouldn't be messing with this. You might break your game.

Please do not post edited base game maps to the workshop. The bulk of it is not your work, and I for one don't want to see dozens of copies of the base game maps each with one tiny little change the modder thought was critical.

I don't think it's problematic, it's rather a good thing to be able to choose from improved versions.

Is there a possibility to edit existing city in map editor? I need to change some road connections
leftbehind May 8, 2015 @ 11:22am
you can use cimtographer mod to export road map of your city, and then later import that road map in to the map editor on same map = new map with roads but no buildings

no - I meant can I edit current playing city? Can I amend connections, resources etc. ?

Not currently, although modders are trying to find ways to make it possible.

Connections: I believe the "81 tiles" mod (can't remeber exact name) opens up all areas/territories right to the very edge of the map, and while most stuff you build there will break and despawn, apparently any roads/rail you connect to the edge of the map will work as outside connections, so that potentially fulfils that part of the requirement.

Resources: As for adding more resources to existing map, I'm not aware of any mod that does that currently. There is a mod that makes infinite iron/ore, but most people agree that is too much like cheating - not that anyone cares about the cheating in a single player game, but more that people who use it feel it removes any challenges too completely.

Terrain: There is also a terraform mod which allows you to alter the landscape (but not create rivers) which is pretty awesome, I've completely reshaped several of my games using that mod.

It should be mentioned that you have to copy the Orginal maps FROM YOUR GAME FILE FOLDER (Like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Cities_Skylines\Files\Maps ) to your PERSONAL USER FOLDER (Like C:\Users\$User\AppData\Local\Colossal Order\Cities_Skylines\Maps)

Most of the Stuff you saved or downloaded are here.

Hey thanks gordon.r.horne for the explanation! I tried moving a few maps over and sure enough i can load them from the editor now.
But I couldn't find one map in the Steam folder for some reason. I checked in steamapps\common\Cities_Skylines\Files\Maps hoping to find the Shady Strands (Temperate) map, but it wasn't in there. I re-opened the game to check, and the map is definitely an option when I start a new game, but it's not listed in the Maps folder with all the rest. Any advice?

weeeeell, nevermind, i figured it out. for some reason the vanilla map files are labelled randomly. Shady Strands map is labelled as "SouthEurope2FINAL"
