You have to unlock things through milestones. Early on you want to start off as small as you can and only provide what your population needs. Don't build everything at once or you will go broke. Remember at first your population is dumb. All they need is the basics and nothing more. Pay attention to your demand meters.

I built water, sewage a few houses and a very small commercial zone because people were complaining no power/water/sewage. Literally only 4 roads have something on them, but went broke doing that. so I'm stuck basically

If you are new to city building games going broke on you first city is pretty standard.

Last city builder I played was Caesar 3 :P Just tried the same save again with just an electricity plant, water and seqage and a few houses. Still no money, still broke and not enough electricity. I had a bit more than four streets before, but still noth much. Got even less now and can't do anything again, because, no money

Literally supplying 9 houses and I'm in negative balance again. I remember Caesar 3, you really had to mess up to go broke

Everyone moved out when I was looking at my phone :/

Sounds like you're building too many long roads, as they are not free to build or maintain. You do need to get people paying you taxes if you want to keep the city running. Pace yourself in the early game, and/or the entire game, or you'll break the bank. Don't build too much until your income is positive.

Getting started can be tricky. It might help if you up the game speed so the city grows closer to the speed you're building at.

I figured it may have been something like that. This time I built the electricity and water first, then a few houses. Am 3 grand in the hole :/ with not enough electricity (doubled the plants from last time)

Have you connected the electricity, probably with power lines? And are you sure they're set up correctly? I'm assuming you're not putting the houses next to the power plant.

When highlighting the power menu, there should be blue area around houses, the power plant, etc. You have to manually connect them when it's a large distance with the power lines, but once you've got power in the neighborhood the buildings will hook themselves up and the blue area will expand. Make sure you put the power lines within the blue boxes once the houses are up.

Also, if you're using the wind turbines, not all areas have the same amount of wind, so be careful when placing them. Aim for areas that show up dark blue when you have the turbines selected.

Yup, I was, but I had more powerlines than needed. I think I'm getting it now, but now there's not enough power to provide water and still 3 grand in the hole. Let's try again

when you build your first power plant / water pump, go to budget and dial down the funding all the way.. remember to bump it up again as needed, and be sure you're back at 100% funding before building more power / more water.
