How do I delete a large square or whole area?

I've tried to drag the bulldoze tool every possible way and I want to restart a few sections of my city.

You don't - Yet anyway.

I expect they'll add brushes for demolishing and trees soon though - They are both very highly requested.

Dezone the area and the buildings will disappear.

If you have the "Move It!" mod, you can use the marquee selection tool (the icon is the single square) to manually select a block area. There is a bulldoze option on the Move It mod itself (not the default ingame bulldozer) which you can use to get rid of selected items. :)
