Reddit thread where I found the link to the Paradox forums where people were having issues with crashing on exit. This went on to discuss a finite limit to the number of assets one may be subscribed too and let to the pretty simple resolution of my problem:

Let me know If I can be of further assistance. I think in my case I had over 1300 assets/mods and got rid of about 200 of them.
i think it works as an early warning for the error where game eventually is unable to launch.
