So in a way it's the same as Simcity 2013.
Nah mate, it's really not. They will pay higher tax rates in these areas(as previously mentioned) and they will produce goods but you won't be able to sell them personally(like you could in SCcrap, from the videos I've seen so far). The goods produced in industrial areas will be delivered to commercial areas for residents to buy.
I just have to play with my own goods then? well just keep hoping i guess ;)
If you can't get someone else to play with them, you might aswell.

I'm sure I remember a screenshot that showed income from transport but I'd need to confirm that.
After Launch who knows, if the demand from players is enough for an expanded Freight/Trade/Industry system I'm sure that they'd look into.
AFAIK The paid for DLC for after launch will be focussed on additional functionality, this could be a good example of that but would need to have enough people wanting it to justify development.
That game would be called Industry: Smog Sky.
