The most recent SimCity I tried was SC3000, and like its predecessors I found it to be "minutes of fun for the whole family". The idea was sound, but it was too restrictive, and after building a functioning city, there was always a point where everything you did would only make it worse.

When I tell people about Cities:Skylines, I tell them "it's like SimCity, but good."

Same, both are good if you know how to play them right.

No contest... Cities Skylines 100%
I played Simcity from inception so I know the game; it's not even close.

for pure simulation, SimCity (2013) hands down by a mile.

For building/modding a metropolis, Cities Skylines.

+1
Me too, I played all of them when they came out and enjoyed every one. SimCity4 I played for over a decade. I recently got SimCity4 to load up and found it a nice place to visit but the evolution of city building has come too far for me to go back. Cities: was a huge leap forward. Having played SimCity gave me a great understanding for the genera and could be very useful to those new to city building.

after 1600 hours of playing cities skylines i can confirm that the game can be quite realistic when played with assets for me its not the case i am mostly playing for Transport infrastructure and traffic engineering

If you are referring to the SimCity reboot, Cities Skylines by far. SimCity 2013 is garbage IMO.

If you are referring to SimCity 4, and you are new to the genre, then I would still stick to Cities Skylines, as it is 3D and more mod-friendly. That being said, it is a robust city builder on its own.

Transport Fever 2 is a great alternative if your focus is in public transport, especially rail related things.

i have played sim city since its inception. each iteration was best in class for its time. nostalgia aside, cities skylines is miles ahead of any version of sim city.

Technically this game isn't much (or at all) better, and it's far too restrictive.

Mods are what make this one vastly superior since they invalidate the restrictions, among other reasons.
