Time to upgrade my PC
I have a 9 year old Dell XPS 8700 desktop computer that I want to replace in order to play CS 2. It has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB DDR 3 video card, 12GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz (4GBx2 + 2GBx2) and has been UPGRADED to 32GB, 4th Generation Intel(R) Core(T M) i7-4790 processor (8M Cache , up to 4.00 GHz) with a 1TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive. Right now it takes about an hour to load the game and it lags a lot while playing. I am not computer savvy so I am reaching to the community for help. I looked at the requirements for the game but it looks all alien to me. Can anyone recommend a new PC capable of running CS 2 based on the recommended system requirements or something better. Again, it's been 9 years since my last PC purchase so I don't even know how much money to spend. Thanks for any input.

UPDATE!!! I went to Micro Center and purchased a Power Spec G444 PC.
It has:
Intel Core i7 12th Gen 12700KF 2.7GHz Processor
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 12GB GDDR6X
32GB DDR4-3200 RAM
1TB Solid State Drive
Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
2.5GbE LAN
WiFi 6 802.11ax
Bluetooth 5.2
AIO Liquid ML 240L Coole

CS would take about an hour to load but now it loads in 5 minutes. I am shocked and amazed. Thank you all for help.

Yes, I agree. But save it for future so someone can play the old relic city games on it.

I just built a new PC about 10 years since my last one. I was building a 64GB RAM machine, and got an extra 16GB as part of a bundle when buying the mobo and processor. The mobo handles all 80GB RAM.

The extra RAM is letting me load saves in short order that took well over 10 minutes on my old PC.

I went with a 3060 video card to save some cash. My total spend on components (building from the ground up) was about $1500.

If you have access to a Microcenter, I'd recommend them. You can 'build' your machine online and get the parts to fit your budget,

Your system still meets minimum requirements for CS2. But barely.

Most any recent gaming rig will handle cities skylines 2.

My rig I am building will be way overkill with high memory parts, but here are my specs:

Pick whatever box you want to put it in. I chose a small Lian Li 011 Air Mini.

Thanks for you input. I'll check out Microcenter. Do they build it for you or do you have to do it yourself?

Microcenter will build the PC from the parts you select for a fee.

Just a question. Can someone help me?
i have an i5 7200U 8 GB Ram
Intel HD Graphics 620
Can i run this game with that? I am going to have problems?

your main issues are:
- that GPU. It's extremely weak by today's standard. Find a second hand RTX3060 for example and seriously that machine can still handle modern games no problem
- that HDD is seriously holding you back on everything, even day to day computing. SSD is cheap nowadays, it will make everything feels far more snappy & boost game load time by milessss

But because it is an OEM PC, the power supply is likely not able to run power hungry GPU.... will have to go for much lower choices. I think most mid ranges card all draw 100W or more... it's will bit hard if the OEM PSU is trash. It is possible however, to limit power draw on driver (as far as AMD goes, it can). I once ran a RX580 on an OEM PC with 200W power supply..... Please don't do what I do 🤣😄😆

Why not just change the power supply you may ask? Because DELL. The plug is not the same!!! I dealt with many Dell office PC of intel core-i gen 4xxx before, the plug are proprietary. You can't swap the power supply without also swap the motherboard.

Upgrade choices?
- value for money CPU : intel i5 12400F, 12500... (DDR4 platform)
- GPU : RTX3060 12GB / AMD 6600XT / 6700XT 12GB
- storage : M.2 nVME SSD, no reason to go other slower option these days

you can't. Intel HD is not supported. You need a proper graphic card to play this game.
8GB RAM is also extremely low when an integrated graphic is involved. Minimum 16GB.
while there will be people that say you can "run" it...
I really doubt the experience will be tolerable.

if you not into acquiring new devices anytime soon, can consider play it on GeForce Now cloud streaming service (monthly subcription) instead. That way you get to play the game at proper performance, as long as you have internet okay enough to stream it.

Is a HP 15s a good Laptop?
AMD Ryzen 5 5500u 16 GB RAM, 1000 GB SSD, HD Graphics
4,00 GHz boost, DDR4-SDRAM

some prase it, others dont. Its cheeper now in my country, so i can affort to buy it. I wouldnt like to go over 500€. It seams to have everything needed this days, aside Ryzen 7, but than it costs 200€ more only coz of that.

Laptops are a terrible choice for gaming. They are low powered systems so they can run on batteries. That system doesn't have a dedicated graphics card (GPU) with VRAM, so I wouldn't even consider it for CS1.

A decent gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU can run over $1,000

If you can swing it, I'd go for a tower system, but you'll need a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

but $500 for any system is going to be under powered for this game. And you'll need more for CS2, if you plan on buying it.

Maybe you can pick up a decent used system for a little less? Preferably a Ryzen R7 or better CPU and Radeon GPU with +8GB of VRAM.

"nameinvalid" above, posted a decent tower system and should be under $1000 if you build it yourself. all you need is a screwdriver and a table without a carpeted floor (to eliminate static electricity). You still need a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Is a good laptop for what it is, a working laptop.

CS1 is not too graphically intensive, so it should be able to run small cities in CS1, a few tiles or so, though it will likely have issues if you push the game any further.

A dedicated GPU is highly recommended, and if you can aim for a desktop instead of a laptop.

Definitely not CS 2.

Why laptop? A proper gaming capable laptop is at least in the range of 700, with RTX3050 dedicated GPU.
The CPU usually isnt big concern, its the GRAPHIC capability. As ugly as vanilla CitiesSkylines is, it still need proper gpu to run it well, more so if you intend to mod it, and play CitiesSkylines 2 or other modern games.

I dont have a PC for about 10 years now and there is no single way to buy it in the next 20y. I dont have space for this in my flat. Plus i am on the move, so i have to take it with me. I cant take a PC with me, when going to my parents or where ever. And its too expensive to buy both, expecially when i dont have room for this. And its not worth to buy a PC for 1000 € only for gaming, as i am not even a gamer. I need something good and mobile.

As i understand not much in CPU and other stuff (thats why i am even here) i have to idea how to build components together. I get that i need Ryzer R7, but thats basically it.
Again, i need a mobile Laptop which is as good as possible for accteptable money to run all this games. It dont have to be superior, simpy load, run, not lagging, that i can build a Town without error.
OldyButCrafty Sep 22, 2023 @ 3:33pm
Yup I agree, time for an upgrade.
And to answer your question; open your walket, look in it, count all the money you have available after food an rent and buy the absolute biggest beast you can afford above the "Recomended hardware".

Above all else don't spend it on a Mac and expect anything that will do the job south of 5k.

My 18 month old Mac pro is useless for anything other than video processing.
That's what it's for and works great, anyone that says otherwise just won't admit it to themselves.

Just use what you got and run it through a cloud gaming service and pay monthly fee service to stream the game from an online service.
