In a new city, I usually use something very simple like this,

That can later be upgraded to a larger version if traffic inreases beyond the capacity for that road.

4lane- "Autobahn" with 2 lanes in each direction..
Anyone else notice also, all the low density houses have driveways but everyone parks on the road? No wonder you get trafic jams all the time day and night.... ok day....
Poiint being they are not really a good alternative to highway for connecting districts.
