How to specify platforms for intercity trains?
I want to separate the platforms for local and intercity trains.

you need to use this mod and the press SHIFT when you connect to a different platform

Well I mean forbid intercity trains to use certain platforms.

If you are using a multi-platform station, the intercity trains need to be able to stop at any platform. Trying to restrict them will most likely cause them to not use said station. What you can do is make sure that you allow them at a multi-platform station, but disallow them at local stations to keep traffic down.
Is there any mod to control platform usage?

Yes, snowflitzer linked it above.

But as far as I know you cannot use that mod for intercity trains, because these do not have lines you setup/create yourself (intercity trains spawn at the edge of the map, load up passengers and then ride to a trainstation that allows/accepts these intercity trains.

You can choose wether a train station allows/accepts intercity trains or not.

Best thing you can do is have a train station that accepts intercity trains, and another train station right next to it, which doesn't. But the one that doesn't accept intercity trains has the train lines on them you can set up yourself. And for these lines you can use the mod.

The quad track stations are great but it's not easy splitting the train traffic leading in to them.

What I have done is create a station that can have 2 different sets of train lines connected to it.

In the image linked above I have the central quad tracks for local trains, the two middle tracks are great for non stopping trains being able to bypass the platforms

The outer set of tracks I have linked to an external rail network which isn't connected to the internal network at all. This makes sure the uncontrolled intercity trains don't interfere with the rest of the train network.

Plus, I always have 4 different railway track systems in my city.
1) for internal passenger trains
2) for internal cargo trains

====> the ones above do NOT intersect with each other, nor do they intersect with the below ones

3) external passenger trains
4) external cargo trains.

This for the most part. I use multi-platform stations to connect the outside so tourists can change trains to my internal trains.

I do too but the tracks do not cross each other :)

there's a workshop mod that adds some addition train stations, including ones for metro. They include ones with bypass tracks which is a set of 4 tracks, but only two actually are connected to a platform. This way you can have a line pass through the station without causing a jam. It's really designed for express trains and quad-rails and the bummer is the tracks alternate direction instead of half n half (But i think MOM mod lets you change this?)

What I mean is:

If you have a set of Quad Tracks going North-South (assuming right hand drive) it will go S-N-S-N. Some of my rail traffic would flow much better if it went S-S-N-N. However i think realistically it just depends on the needs of traffic as trains can be moved to a siding as needed, so I'm testing homebrew siding rails for a cross-country rail line i'm making to connect two ends of my region.

Transport Fever 2 lets you control rail lines with signals but i have not completely tested the capabilities of TPME in Cities regarding rail lines much. Anyone know if there's a functioning railway signal mod?
