Huge problems with bridge building
Hi to all of you! Has anyone else the problem that the automatic bridge building doesn´t work?? In order to cross a river or lake (even relatively small distances) I cannot simply drag a road (any roadtype) over the river to the other side, oh no! I have to build the bridge part for part and must adjust the hight of the road for each part again by guessing the correct hight above the waterline by visuell oberservation to get the bridge straight. And to make it even more interesting the needed hight of the bridge pillars depends obviously from the depth of the seabed at that special location, so it differs all the time. It is extremely (!) difficult to build a simple horizontal bridge that way!!! And building a nice CURVED bridge is about as easy as hitting the jackpot in a lottery. I had this problem from the very beginning, so it´s not a caused by a mod. Anyone here who has that, too, or- even better- knows how to fix it?? Any help would be most appreciated!

Please dont take offence, but it sounds like you are not doing something right, or don't relize how its done. I simply just drag a road from one side of the water to the other and bam... bridge. I can even use the curved roads. When there is very flat land that leads to water like a beach area you might need to raise a bit of the road (page up) to form an abutment before you able to build a bridge. but from hill to hill, it should be as easy as just drag a road across.

There are some limits to bridge height but I am playing a map with deep gourges and the bridges are still spanning the gaps in most locations.

Perhaps be a bit more sepcific about what you are having trouble doing.

To echo the point above, you don't have to draw a bridge literally from one shore to the other - start further back on higher land and it should work.

However, please don't think I am insulting your intelligence - I simply think back to previous city builders and recall how drawing bridges was a very different task depending on said game.

I get where you're coming from and at first glance it can seem a little tricky to get a level horizontal bridge. But the solution is actually quite simple. Use the Terraformer Tool mod to level the sea bed precisely along the underside of the bridge location. Then just bridge over that stretch and voila a perfectly level bridge.
This can also be done for a curved bridge but honestly, curved bridges are so rare that they're almost non existent. Engineers build straight bridges for good reason. Stress transference and all that jazz ;)

ive actually found if you raise the elevation right before the river/lake and adjust on the other side you can end up with a perfectly level bridge every time, as well as have the pillar supports in basically the same place as well. yeah ocd

Many thanks to all of you for your friendly answers! Of course I have tried (and tried) to simply drag the road/ bridge from one side to another- doesn't work. I even saw in Lets- Play- videos on YouTube that it does work that way with others, but not with me. I also tried to approach to build a nice bridge ramp on both sides of the river first and then simply to connect both ends- doesn't work. What happens is that the middle of the bridge every time sinks under the waterline. Pressing "page up" doesn't change that. Only if I build a very small part of the bridge and give it a hight of about 63-69 meters (!!!) that bridge-part will be build above the waterlevel. AND as I just found out I can't even build tunnels from one riverside to another, at least not by simply dragging the tunnel as seen in the tutorial of e.g. "The flying Ross" . There must be something wrong with my game, but who to turn to?!? Or any other advice? Best regards, Celisar PS Terraforming might work, but I would rather fix my game.

Hi Celisar, I don't think it's you. I have had the same problem for a long time. I am at present trying to find out why.

I disabled all my assets and mods and it works fine, (you will need to start a new game to test it), now I am slowly adding mods in a few at a time to find the offending mod. If that doesn't break it again I will then add assets in, a few at a time.

If I find the cause, I will post it here, but it will take some time (74 mods & over 300 assets) so maybe you want to try the same.

Good luck

That's a relief and an unjoyous surprise at the same time.... I don't have quite as many mods and assets as you have but this will still be a looooot of work! Sometimes this game feels more like work one should be paid for than fun. (I just spend several hours analyzing traffic problems and brooding over the best public transport system!) Thanks for your kind help though :)

It sounds like you're using mods, in this case, the No Pillars mod. Try building a bridge without any mods enabled.
As for 'The Flying Ross', he's a good example of one of the many bad tutorials out there on Youtube imo. His knowledge is ok but his application is awful and more likely to teach you bad habits than not. Compare any of his with one from 'Pirate and Fade' for example and you'll see what I mean.

@Celisar

Well, I think I found it (at least on my system) It seems to be a mod called "Road Anarchy"

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=418556522

Although, it also happens with "Advanced Road Anarchy" But I did find a fix.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=422797220

With this enabled my bridges work perfectly, it's quite a useful tool as well, but it does throw up an error (mod exception) when you load a game, just click ok and all is good.

It's no good with "Advanced Road Anarchy" though, it stops it working. Maybe, if it works for you, you might like to just enable it when you want to build bridges.

Ok, this is getting more complicated, lol. I have found that once you have the problem, you need to exit the game and clear your temporary files before restarting the game (I use CCleaner for this)

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

The free version is fine.

Ok, no problem. And many thanks again for your concern and help! It's wonderful to find such friendly help!

@Celisar, go grab Fine Road Heights. Choose bridge build mod. Done.

I currently have this problem and it has been so after the patch that added terrain editing to gameside, i suspect it might be a buf related to the new button they added for more bridge/tunnel elevation option.
