Public transit - what's good
What numbers do you consider good when it comes to public transit? Of a city of 22k I've got about 1800 passengers per week in my busses. A bit short of my goal of having this number to be 10% of total population.

does it do an impact in traffic

Yep, without it my city would lock up. I like avoid the big wide roads and use them sparingly so public transit becomes very important.

big roads are good, but you need to feed them with smaller roads only every few 100 meters.

My city currently has 51K population, and I've got roughly 6500 passengers per week for public transit system (2700 for buses and 3800 for metro) and the income from public transit can roughly cover its expenses (not including cargo trains as they bring no income)

Dont mean to hijack your thread but I have a population of 37,000 and only 423 bus passnegers a week and 0 transit passengers a week. i'm thinking I'm doing something wrong

@joelzhow What's your secret?

yep more or less around the numbers of #joelzhow...
But anything near and above 10% of pop using transports is considered to have already a noticeable impact to help your traffic load...

I personally aim from 10% to 15%, bus and metro... never been really good at using trains on my side...
As for secrets, there are some good guides out there for public transports (and I'm beeing lazy looking for them to link, so I'll link a general guide for traffic that does have a public transport section, so always good to read anyway)

90k population, 15k transport use over Bus, Metro and Train. Don't make money on it as my rail network is expensive.

I was on 10k use a few days ago, by simply sorting out my transport I increased usage and my overall revenue too so I lose less from it now. I was getting 1k at platforms or 500 at bus stops, now I have more trains and buses it has sorted itself out. Using the IPT - Improved Public Transport mod. Something else I did was at busy stations, ones with 2 or more lines that connected different areas, I seperated it into 2 stations to the metro trains didn't have to wait and everyone got around quicker.

In the early days of my city, 1-2 tile size, I had 20% use but it died off as the city got bigger.

I actually don't have any secrets. Just carefully plan your metro route to cover the main traffic flow origin and destination, and use the bus line to collect passengers for metro. You can read some traffic guides on steam. I found them pretty practical.

_force people to use public transport by isolated parts of city from each other, mostly uses for trains since they carry more people at once.

_concentrate metro in main commercial district, make sure to place one of the stop next to big train station / harbor / airport / bus hub.

_dont place metro directly next to resident, the noise pollution may ruin it. Instead cover resident with bus, and make a final stop / bus hub next to metro.

_industry and office only need minimum cover from bus route. You may not need any if other services are enough to get them to LVL3.

52K city, 9K+ on Public Transport (using the IPT mod). I have 3 major train stations around the city center (a bit like London) and a circle line running between those 3 major train stations and neighbourhoods. A subway system in the city center, off course connected to the three major train stations and bus lines running in the neigbourhoods which transfer at the smaller train stations. Seems to work very well.

My current city has a population of 50k, with 6.6k using public transport. I've just followed the instructions in the "How to traffic" guide. I have buses running small routes within districts, generally circular routes, with a second route running the opposite direction. Each district then has a single metro stop, which I use as a hub for the districts buses. My city is currently made of 3 regions broken by rivers. Each region has its own circular metro line connecting all the metro stations, again with another route running in the opposite direction. I then have a dedicated passenger rail lines, with one station per region, right next to a metro station.

This means that anyone can get anywhere via public transport. They take a bus from their house to the district metro, take that to the industrial disctrict, then a bus from the industrial metro to their work. If they really need to, they can get the bus from their house, to the metro, to the train station, to a second region, then back to that region's metro, then a bus to their final destination.
