How to tell when ore runs out?
Is there a way to tell when your ore runs out? As soon as you draw out a district for ore industry and zone it, the buildings turn blue in the resource view. However, I've spotted a few ore trucks coming into my city now and there was no message about running out of ore. Nothing looks any different than before, but I don't want factories to import ore just to keep operating--I'd planned to change several of the mining zones to regular industry after the ore was used up. Is there any way to know--other than watching for import trucks?

Click the resource icon in the left hand panel. It will give a color map. Blue is ore. When it isn't blue anymore, you are out. The ore trucks can be delivering from specialized to general, or exporting, or importing. I like to check for the blue.

That's what I was doing, but the second the ore zone develops, you get your buildings showing in blue. Nothing changes between then and when they eventually run out and start importing. It looks the same as before, yet there are clearly trucks bringing in the ore now??

EDIT to add: Checking the Outside Connections data, all my mining zones indicate they are both importing and exporting ore products?? It's very odd! I definitely need to change some factories back to regular instead of mining, but there should be a proper way to tell when your resources change over to importing.

There are raw products and processed products. Both will show in blue.

It could be that your ore industries are importing raw ore and processing it, then exporting the processed ore products.

Balancing these raw and processed products of each kind is a lot of fun but it's a shame it's almost a completely hidden mechanic.

By the way: What you extract from the ground is the raw material of course :)

I changed half of the mining facilities to generic industry, which reduced importing traffic dramatically. I still allow some mining factories to stay in business and process the imported ore, as it makes a good chunk of money for the city. We are also exporting oil somehow, despite not having any oil industry going yet. The Box Factories around town seem to be producing enough oil to export, which is very weird! LOL

In my other games, most of my industry was farming, forestry and generic, so I didn't see this behaviour very much in previous games. I like it, but I do wish there was a message indicating that your ore companies are looking for good deals on raw materials or something like that.

There should be an easier way to see the status of the raw materials beneath a mine or oil well. In my last game, I had an oil patch going pretty strong but it was the same way--no clear indication of the oil running out.

Ok so just a few hints...

- If you really want to play and have fun with specialized ore and oil... better get the infinite ore and oil mod...

- Then you have to find the size of the extracting facility... because if not the correct size, most likely you'll have only processing ore and oil industries and not extracting...

- extracting size for ore is 4x4
- extracting size for oil is 3x4 (3 is the part that connects to the road (thus if wanting an extracting ore plant, avoid placing those at road corners as it might well connect the 4 side to the road...)

Knowing that and doing so at corret place, you'll export far more raw, but I also can confirm that I indeed export raw, I still have imports of ore or oil, but I assume as I don't process nearely as much as I extract is because I lack processed materials for producing goods... but still with a good cargo rail, you can well lower your trucks, and connect extracting and processing zones only, and rail transfer to generic industry zones it's still quite a good fun

+1 to BonPadre.

I'd just add that in order to boost processing plants (of whatever goods) one can just have a specialized district (or part of the district) on top of soil that does not have that raw product.

For example, if you put an ore district where there's no ore they'll be 100% processing. That way you can control any surplus of raw materials.
