Building heights
My city builds only very small, 5-6-storey building. No skyline. Also, many of the buildings are identical. Do I have to download millions of individual growable assets? Is this all they have in-game?

And why do people only build monuments and big buildings from real life? Why not some more imaginative ones? I suppose I can do i myself, but it's not really my thing, making assets. It's just disappointing that the only ploppable ones seem to be all from the actual world.

I was hopping for bigger buildings as well!

High density residential, for one example, routinely gets 14+ storeys tall once they've fully leveled up. If you're not getting taller buildings, either the zoning is wrong (eg low vs high density) or the land value is insufficient to level them up.

There are tons of fictional assets in the Workshop from really cool stuff to the quite bizarre.
Here are a few examples, there are plenty more if you bother to look.
They don't come bigger than this ;)

Will using workshop items mess up my steam account?

No it wont mees your stuff, it might mees your game if they update it tho, to be on the safe side, just download assets, like buildings and parks, not HUD elements or other things like that, depending on the amount of assets you have you might notice longer loading times, but thats it, fairly worth it if you ask me.

if you ever encounter a problem, there is now an option that disables all mods right from the main menu, so you should be safe no matter what! give it atry!

It's also worth pointing out that the European themed maps have no skyscrapers by default.
And here is an ever-growing collection of fictional futuristic supertall skyscrapers, just as one example of what you can find on the workshop.

Yep ... whilke the european building types definitely represent well smaller cities (and southern german cities) it definitely doesn´t present larger cities all too well (Frankfurt, for example, but also Cities like Essen or Berlin).

It definitely would have been good if, instead of having row housing architecture throughout all of the house levels, they would have included the chance to get the occasional high rise building at higher levels of commercial and residential lots.

Or maybe a (better) idea would have been, to make it dependant on the city size ... i.e. the higher the level of the city, the higher the chance for high rise buildings to appear
