Traffic not flowing, cars stopping at intersection
Hi,
I have a problem that I have run into several times and I can't quite explain. Imagine a one-way road with a lot of traffic coming from a highway joining another road. The second one has very little traffic. There are no traffic lights. For some reason every car coming from the first road stops at the intersection. This causes a huge traffic jam. There is no reason for the cars to stop at that point. They behave as if there was a stop sign at the intersection. Can anyone explain what might be going on?

Not 100% sure on the setup, a screenshot would help. There may well be a stop-sign there. Most traffic joining another road ends up with a stopsign. Or they are going from a smaller road to a larger one, in which case the larger one gets priority. You can tweak priorities using the Traffic Manager mod.

you can give us a screenshot of that intersection for better information, right now I'm quite not sure how is it behaving like you said. Also, any traffic-related mod ?

Yes, I am using Traffic++ to handle lanes, and the Toggle Traffic Lights mod to remove a few traffic lights. I have had the exact same issue before when using Traffic Manager instead of Traffic++, or with no mod at all. Here is a screenshot showing the current setup:

As you can see there are no cars coming from the right, so the traffic from the highway ramp should flow freely onto the intersection. However every car stops, as if there was a stop sign.

It's a very odd intersection you have there. The ramp traffic indeed seems to be the only ones that should go straight, but at 4 land road kinf of uses the same intersection. Is there any reason all those roads have to come together like that? As far as I can tell, the off-ramp only needs to connect to the far left road and has no reason to share an intersection with the traffic from the 4-lane. Havine two 4-way intersections so close seems a good way to generate a lot of traffic, as only 1 car at a time can use the middle waiting area. A roundabout might be a better solution to all those roads coming together.

Maybe this shows a little better what I am doing:

I agree that the intersection might be a bit odd, but at the moment the only thing really causing trouble is that the traffic from the ramp is not flowing properly. I have had the same issue in completely different setups, like a 2-lane one-way road joining a 6-lane one-way.

Actually I have even had the problem in a roundabout - with cars stopping when entering the roundabout, even though there was no traffic on it.

It's 'normal' the car stop because the road between the two intersection are too short and the AI think he will not be able to 'clear' the intersection so they stop to avoid traffic issue. So you should space up your intersections.

The yellow sportscar going west is still passing the intersection, and has thus only just made room for a new car from the offramp to go towards the intersection. Only one car fits between those intersection, or maybe the game even thinks it's too small for one car. I can imagine every car from the offramp waiting till the car before it has cleared the large intersection.

Why not get rid of the roads going north and south from the large intersection? It would remove that problematic intersection and these roads north and south seem to have a connection to an avenue slightly more west.

Right, that makes sense. The cars want to avoid getting stuck on an intersection.

The layout changed quite a bit since, the issue went away by itself. But when it happens the next time I'll check if that is the reason for it. Thanks for your help!

1. Your junctions are way too close, space them out more , try redesigning it and putting in a roundabout?

2. The green car, you have a pink line from that to the right lane, but the driver might want to turn left... give him a pink line from there to the left lane so he can go on and turn left.

3. The green car might even want to do a "u" turn onto the duel carrage way.

4. Yep scrap the junction and redo. Looking at the 2nd screen shot of the overhead, I would scrapp the roads at the end of the highway and put in a roundabout system.

idk if you solved it already but just from your original post, It sounds like a thing I had where the guy in front wants to turn but cant right away for some reason. in cases like these stop signs usually do the trick, just make the road with the line of cars the "main road" and put stop signs on all perpendicular or other paths

you necroed a two year old post to tell them about a fix that was unavailable to them at the time? weird.

Thank god they necroded a post so I could find it 2 years later to fix my own roads.

You mean a 4-year old post that was last replied 2-years ago. lol
