Game freezes on "Paradox Interactive" screen while loading.
I downloaded the game on my old PC a few weeks ago. Game was slow, which I expected on that PC, but it worked fine. I decided to upgrade to a gaming computer last week with specs that were more than beyond what is recommended. New desktop PC has Windows 10. Installed Steam and Cities: Skylines, game worked absolutely GREAT!!!! 2 days ago my game started freezing whenever I would save it. I would have to exit out through the task manager and I was never able to save my work on my city. I used the auto save option and that would work until around the 3rd or 4th time it would autosave then it would freeze.

I uninstalled then reinstalled Cities: Skylines and I was able to load the game again but I didn't have any of the mods or assets I downloaded. I logged out of Steam then relogged in.....game now had the mods and assets saved. Tried loading my saved city.....game froze again. Now I can't even get the entire game to run.

Appreciate any help I can get. I love this game, so much I spent 2 grand on a new PC and monitor, so I'd like to get back to playing it again. Thanks again in advance for any help.

Well let's start with the assumption that something has obviously changed and it's not likely to be the game as that was last updated 2 months ago.


Ok, 1st things first.

1. Verify the cache via the steam library

2. Check your graphics Drivers, Win 10 doesn't always get it right.

3. What does the log file say, install folder Cities_Data/output_log.txt

4. What does devinfo.txt say in the install folder.

If you need to post the log use a site like PasteBin

Verified the cache and it seems my graphics drivers are good (the game was running just fine on Windows 10 from Thursday through Saturday just fine....I made no changes at all).

I'm clueless as to what you mean about both the Cities_Data/output_log.txt and devinfo.txt and what it says......there's a boatload of info on there so I don't know what you want me to look for.

I should mention again that I did nothing and made no changes to anything at all. Game was working great....then it just stopped working out of nowhere.

That happened to me jusrt right now, it was working fine and then every time I open it, it crashed in the same place as you :/

The game was last updated 2 months ago.

So taking that as a premise, what could have changed?


Do you use mods?

I did....and, again, the game was working quite fine with the mods. I even unsubsribed from all the mods and yet no dice at all. Game just freezes on start up still.

Let me ask this, though: is there a limit to the number of mods/assets that one can subscribe to? Is it possible to subscribe to too many of them?

Ok....I got the game to load finally. I think it may have been an issue with me being subscribed to too many assets. I unsubscribed from a couple of hundred and now the game loads. Gotta admit, though, a little disappointing that it seems I can't subscribe to as many as I want.....there's a lot of good ones out there and the diversity I had in my buildings was quite nice.

You may want to add back most of those. It's probably just 1 or 2 of the mods that are causing that.

I had well over 5,000 assets subscribed to. Might've a little more than 1 or 2. Anyway, I'm just gonna start a new city all over from scratch and be a little more selective with what I subscribe to. Thanks again for the suggestions and help....appreciate it.

Try removing this asset : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=480707781

I used to have such headaches with loading times. I decided to unsubscribe all and resubscribe one at a time "took forever" but for me, i found that the above mod specifically had me stuck at the paradox loading screen for aaaages. let me know if removal of that asset worked for anyone else
