There-abouts of 3 years or just short of that, if that's indeed what it is. There may be more to this acheivement but you'll have to 'view acheivements' to tell for sure.

I tested the length of the day-night cycle and at the fastest speed it's about 4:30 for a full cycle. So if you idle at max speed the achievement will take 4504.5 minutes, 75 hours, or about 3.2 days of playtime to complete the achievement.

I just got this one. Put game at full speed and idled. Currently that city is at year 22xx or 23xx. Did take more than a couple of full days to get it from a brand new city. Also appears that the After Dark DLC is required, even if the original version has day-night cycle after the recent update.

So I just checked my cities. After the day-night cycle update, I ran:
City A 2015-2069
City B 2015-2016
City C 2015-2016
City D 2015-2268
Where City A was before purchasing the DLC, and B, C, D were after purchasing the DLC.

Game was always running at full speed when not paused. Hope this datapoint helps.

I calculated the same and am working towards completing this soon
Can't you just get around this with the Time Warp mod? Set the timers to minimum and just run the game for an hour or two. 70+ hours for one time-based achievement that can't really be measured in-game is a little stupid. A lot of the achievements just seem to be poorly thought out.
A post has been marked as the answer to the topic above.

NVM.. I can verify Alt+Tab and Idling works for ~4 days or ~75hrs of game for 1 save game only... :D

Yeah, Alt+tab, idling, saving and closing the game, turning off computer, it all works. Just have the game run through 1001 nights with acheivements enabled cities.
