While editing in image software remember to not change the colors, keep it in gray shades.

I cant see any other logic solutiojn to this, than to "ASSUME" north is down and south is up, then yo uhave solved this very hard problem :-D
Lol come on, you obviously assumed wrong, since the sun ALLWAYS rise in the east my friend, except if you live in china i think :-D

But, didn't map makers agree that west is the leftside of the heightmap image? Because the map editor reads import gray-scale images and most of us try to line the image's top to north.
