My solution is to only use 2 lane roads (2 way) and highway ramps since if they're only going to use 1 lane, only give them 1. The other thing which helps a lot is to avoid chokepoints - that is give cims lots of options to get to other parts of the city and avoid funneling them onto main roads. If traffic is well distributed such that cims are going every which way instead of all going to the same place then lane use can be much more balanced, so I don't mean to claim that cims can't use more than 1 lane, but the lanes have to be going to different places; an example is ending a highway ramp in a 2-lane 1-way road, with one lane for traffic turning right and the other for traffic turning left. Another example is highways, you can have the left lane for traffic turning left, the middle lane for straight-through traffic, and the right lane for traffic turning right - this requires the offramps be placed so as to support it, if all off ramps are on the same side of the highway basically only two lanes will be used.
Think how you can let people go to where they want without taking this route, which creates a jam.
If they all want to go to that middle road can you find a way to connect the middle road directly to wherever these people are coming from? If not, then can you at least convince them to split the traffic from the road on the left to the road on the right? Add shortcuts and see what happens.
Depending on what you do you might solve it or simply transfer the problem from one spot to another, but chasing the problem away is part of the fun. :)
There are many ways to play this game. Fortunately, real world logic also works.
Which is why more than 1 lane roundabouts are pointless, cars will only ever use the outer most lane.
Except if you use the traffic ai mod which allows them to change lanes if a lane is too congested.
Any link to this guide written by an traffic engineer would be fine. If you have this link can you paste it here?
The same guy has two traffic tutorials, both excellent.
Thanks a lot. There is many good helps in these tutorials. Some things that I don't know, so I'm going to use them.
Don't thank me. I didn't write the (awesome) guide. Thank the author. He deserves your gratitude.
Good luck with your city!
