Is there a day/night toggle key?

Yes, there is. Click the options icon (little gear) in the upper right corner. Then go to game play options. In that menu is a switch to turn day/night on and off.

It needs an instant on/off toggle right in the game screen, where you would instantly switch to day if you are on night and vice versa. Having to go into the option screen is a PITA.

You can also set sun speed to zero if you want to stay in day or night.
