Space already occupied
I'm getting too old for nowadays games i guess. Games like RTC 2 / 3 or Locomotion are my cup of tea. No difficult bendings in which games tell you that the thing you want to create is not possible. Last week i dived into Train Fever which has the "same" road building concept. I tried to build a road bridge over railroads and after thirty minutes of "the game does not allow you to to this" fumbeling and teeth grinding i managed to build a bridge. Ugly as hell but it worked. Problem was: i needed another bridge. I quit the game. The game telling me "NO i do not want you to do that" took the fun out of it.

Now im trying to make a start with Cities Skylines and the same thing is happening. It seems i realy need a LOT of space to create certain connections. I have played Simcity 4 for years and years without having problems i encounter nowadays. Ofcourse i can create a city like i did in SC4 but hell, when i look at those intersections people create i think: "wanna do that too". But maybe im too old or too dumb because whatever i do, the game is always telling me: "Nope, what you want is not possible". Seems like the game has more control over me than i have control over the game. That is probably the things that bugs me. Anyways, i'll give it another try.

Have a :) day!

I found that it usually tells me the space in occupied if there is soemthign underneath where the support pillar would need to go. Some use of the no pillars mod helps here. If you use it sparingly you can get roads to criss cross each other with only those parts missing a pillar. MAybe the vanilla game should be better at that is an argument but at least that mod helps.

I will download the no pillar mod. Hopefully that will help me in some circumstances. Thanks!

you will also get the message if you are trying to build over a 'public service' building such as a hospital or police station. When you build a road through a zoned area it will demolish the zone buildings automatically but not those. You have to remove them first then build your road or whatever.

I own the game for a long time but i just started playing it. Watched you tube vids about the start of the game and how to connect roads to the starting innerstate. I was trying to create overpasses but it needs some knowledge about the game what it allows and what not.
I do not mind about learning how a game must be played but with those new road / track building features with bends and stuff, most of the times i do not understand why something would not be possible. Anyways, i made a start, which took me about three hours so there is a long way to go :)
