How much RAM do I need?
Soon I will build a game pc for playing cities skylines. I want to use a lot of mods. Is 8GB RAM enough or should I buy more?

8 is plenty.

I use 8.

I play with 15 mods and over 500 assets no problem

I have 40 mods and 100-200 assets (I lost count) and have around 80% ram usage with 8GB
(But I have a lot of other crap running in the background lol)

8 is good ... but if you can buy more, put more 8
16 is better, this game eats memory and cores, the more the better : )

As everyone said, 16 is better if you can afford it, but stick to 8 if it means having to reduce cpu power. In fact if you can boost your cpu, do it instead of boosting your ram. It's much easier to upgrade your ram later along the way than the other way around.

Depends on what you mean by 'mods'. Many players confuse or refuse to see the distinction between mods and assets, and call them all mods.
If you want to use a lot of mods, then since most of them are scripts to modify the game mechanics in some way and involve the CPU and not so much the RAM.
If you meant assets and you want to use a lot of them, then RAM is the important factor. The more assets you subscribe to, the more RAM you'll need.
You say you want to use a lot. If that's a lot of assets, then no, 8GB won't be enough.
16GB would be better.

I have 32GB of RAM as I knew the 32GB kit would work with my new DDR4 memory system (X99-6-core) I was building at the time, so I paid extra for peace of mind.

Anyway, the last city I loaded with a few mods and tons of assets was 15GB for the cities.exe file alone, or 17GB total with win10 and nortons plus a myriad of files loaded from random installed programs.

I would buy 16GB minimum if you plan on very large cities (past 9-tiles) and lots of pretty custom content from the workshop. It can add up very quick. Especially with windows plus anti-virus programs, and miscellaneous programs that run in your system tray (down by the clock.)

But as Minoris said, don't focus on RAM as this game uses the CPU most and you can extra memory later. But 8GB would be minimum.

Maybe post a budget or what you've selected for parts to make sure you get it right the first time.

There's nothing worse than buying a new system only to find it isn't enough for your needs.

I built my system to cater for my needs and estimated it would be fine for another 10 years.
Five years later, I'm already starting to contemplate having to build my next...
Funny but tragically true ;)

Only thing ill comment about Win 10 is itll pre load a lot of useless crap into your ram, so 17 sounds like windows on your pc needs to learn its place--or IMHO it needs to stop loading what it thinks are the most used programs into the ram and let the user decide how the pc is used.

Back to the game though is that i agree with

balancing your hardware based on your needs and intended use of it will work in your favour, if you are one though that uses Win10 out of box without optimizing it. Id suggest that you look into modifying the OS first as it WILL impact your gaming experience if you are using alot of demanding games.

I just randomly popped into the forums to look around, I really don't have any time in Cities Skyline. But I saw this topic, and I would advise you to get as much RAM as you can afford. It's not terribly expensive at this point in time, and right now 6GB seems to be recommended for most games, as much as 8GB. 16 minimum will probably be pretty standard in 4-5 years. I built my computer 2 years ago and I was on the fence as to wether I should get 8GB, 12, or 16. I went with 16 and I'm happy with it. Didn't cost much more, and it's come in handy.

Long story short, if you can afford more RAM, get it. You won't regret it, and I think 16GB is going to be standard very soon. And it's less of a cost jump than getting a better CPU or video card. And the way that I look at it, 23 years ago, 4MB of RAM cost $200. Adjusted for inflation that would be around $330 today... for 4MB or RAM.

... 35 years ago, I recall spending £40 GBP($57USD) for a 16K Rampack (memory expander) for my Sinclair ZX81 home computer

As a Computer specialist and one who buys and builds PCs all of the time.

Get 16 GBs.

I went from 8 to 12 and it made quite a difference.
