Try moving your Water Towers and Pumps away from polluted areas.

Thanks, But how do i clean the water now?

You need Water Pumping Stations up stream, Water Draining Pipes (or Water Treatment Plants) down stream, plus water pipes connecting it all. You also need to ensure the water pipes are running underneath every structure or else they won't get water OR be able to dispose of sewage.

I've not played in a long time, but I believe once you stop polluting an area of water, it will slowly clean itself, like ground pollution.

I believe Jester is correct. Once you remove the pollution source from the water, the water will continue to flow and the fresh clean water will slowly begin to push the dirty water downstream to wherever it leads to.

Thank you guys.

Also, careful of areas where water flow isn't strong, it will cause pollution to start going upstream maybe towards your pumps.

Yeah pumps will PULL pollution towards them if there'e enough of them.

Regarding your dirty water. As suggested above, it will eventually flow downstream and off the map. Upgrading to the best water sewage treatment plants will reduce the amount of pollution pumped out so that it will be much less noticeable (but still present!).
However if you don't like the purple water, you can change it with something like this for example,

There are bunch of these to choose from, so you can pick the dirty water colour that appeals to you ;)

They will always do this if the water isn't moving - even with a single pump.

True... I was considering a recent situation where I had a good current taking pollution away however I also had a couple dozen water pumps up stream and they actually turned the current around. Part of this was due to the amount of water put out by the treatment plants (couple dozen of them as well) that created it's own current, of sorts, flowing the opposite direction.

This has probably already been said before, but you'll want your sewage pipes pretty far away from your water pipes. If they do get cross-contaminated, it's no big deal - just move the sewage pipes to a different location and the pollution will slowly move away downstream.

Is this also true for ocean water? The Bay I'm drawing water from is starting to look like a giant toilet bowl .. Hopefully it'll clear up after I move my drain pipe.

Is a dam a good idea? it also makes power, so why not?. What do you think guys?

If you want to clean the water quickly, then you can place some pumps to suck up the dirty water, connect it to an outlet pipe (mod link below), and voila: your water is now magically cleaned. :steamhappy:
Be sure not to link it to the rest of your city :-x
