I thought it had something to do with the new patch being bugged. But then I got the message :(”An error occurred while packaging to the save file.”…”Sharing violation on path”). So, I did a little reading and it seems that not only am I not the only one with this problem, but there has been a running problem with saves doing stuff like this for well over a year. Try doing a search for “Save Crash” in discussions for starters, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Different searches will pull up more and more posts about this. There are 100’s of posts about this on steam alone and nothing in anyone of them about there ever being a resolution!
I tried a lot of the suggestions though, but none of them worked, and I don’t use steam cloud either.
In my opinion all the 100’s of posts about this should be consolidated into one big Pinned post at the top of the discussion forum.
I have found a solution to the problem with my instance of this game. The poor implementation of Direct X by both Microsoft and the game developers is the primary root of the problem, and I suspect many problems with this game.
Right clicking on Cities: Skylines in the Steam Library and select Properties. Click “SET LAUNCH OPTIONS…” and enter this into the field: -force-d3d9
I found this solution posted by the developers of the game on their web site in the bugs section. They know there game has Direct X problems. I also found this solution buried in one Steam post with no indication if it actually worked or not, but it worked for me.
All my save game problems have magically disappeared! It is amazing to me that Direct X would have anything to do with not being able to save a game, but buggy programing is buggy programing.
I also found a very interesting post on Steam that talks some about CS’s programing problems and Direct X:
