Cable Cars: Going Up?
The name instantly brings to mind San Francisco, or for the Brits on here, the slate mining railways in Wales. Actually, the name is often applied to various modes of transportation, many of which I feel could be applied to Skylines in the future.

1: 'Streetcar' Cable Cars: These are the classic hillside affairs in cities like San Francisco, ferried up and down hillsides by motor-powered cables underneath the street, and can be detached from the cable to make station stops. They can be turned around at either end of the line using loop tracks, or manually powered turntables.

2: 'Funicular' Cable Cars: Also known as inclined plane railways, these little guys follow the same cable system as the streetcar types, but lack the ability to detach from the cable mid-trip. They also have the added quirk of being gravity-assisted; the weight of a descending car helps pull the other car up the hill, sometimes on slopes in excess of 30 degrees. Several of these exist in hilly towns and cities around the world, including the famous Duquesne Incline in Pittsburgh, USA, and numerous cities in Chile such as Valparaiso and Santiago.

3. 'Gondola Lift' Cable Cars: London's 'Emirates Air Line' is one such example of this, but many others exist. Following a similar principle to ski lifts, these cars ride on and are supported by a stationary steel cable high in the air, allowing them to easily climb hills and cross gaps at dizzying heights, offering a smooth ride and some spectacular views; perfect for urban transport or access to remote ski resorts.

And what's more, all of these systems are capable of handling cargo as well as passengers, meaning you can easily use them to connect commercial and industrial areas separated by slopes, without having to mess around with the finicky 'too steep!' mechanics of roads and railways.

I wouldn't say they were too steep ;)
These are possible here...

And the terminal loop at the end of the tramline, in this case because of the limited amount of space at the summit of this mountain.
