The canal plague

Ok, I built what I thought was a pretty cool canal area with twisty turns all around a residentual area I was expanding into and starting to develope. I have so far zoned very little residentual zones as I just built it. Right after I build the canal, a plague runs through my city and my population drops from 29k to well under 20k. My health coverage before I build the canal is 100%. I don't care what I do I can not keep up with the sickness then deaths. I mean it goes from like 50 people sick to 5000 in minutes. And of course my income which was like 5k-10k/week at the time dives well into the negatives. By the time it stops, I am in debt to about 20k. All my parks and special buildings are turned off and my taxes are all at 13%. I lowered all my utilities to near nothing. People start moving back in but it's a constant battle to not lose any more money and I don't dare turn anything back on. Then when I hit about 26k pop again, here comes the plague again.

I built a smaller canal area before on the same city in a nearby area and nothing like this happened. Any ideas? I have the game saved, tottally by accident, less than 5 minutes before the plague hits.

Did you hook it up to poopy water?

I am pretty sure I didn't because the pipes are at the other end of my city.

Have you checked the pollution tab in the top left? Check to see whether the water is polluted.

If your canals are up river from where your sewage outflow pipes are, then you should be ok.

If you have any Water Towers, check if they are somehow near Industrial area, also check the pollution tab to see if your land or water is polluted.

Thanks all. I just went back and checked really carefully and I had ONE pipe I missed that was leaking into the canal. It went from about 50 sick to 4.5k sick before I saw it but now it is dropping fast since I deleted the pipe. Thanks again.
