You can also use the slope tool from the 'Network Multitool' mod. This also gives you the gradient in percentages. These are even colored, giving a good visual presentation of the roads steepness.
I found the best way to use NM was not too take extremely long sections, but maybe 10 default node segment and slope it. Then shift 5 nodes further and repeat. This produces a fairly reasonable slope. I find taking an entire highway even with no junctions, it can go crazy (especially if there are turns) and it starts drilling for oil.
Also, MoveIt does a decent job, as well.
