Vanilla multi-level metro hub
My experience with these kind of hubs is that they are used to change metro, in order to use another metro line and reach another area of the city. However, in-game it's not working like that.

I created a gigantic residential area. From one side of this area there's an underground metro towards the metro hub. Then, from this hub there's a metro line (above the ground) going towards industrial/commercial.

The metro line between residential and commercial is very crowded. But, the metro line going towards the other side of the residential area hardly has any passengers. Why?
Is the metro hub not working; are people not able to walk from the underground line to the line above the ground? Or is there another reason why people don't take the metro for going from residential area to residential area?

Residents don't have any particular reason to visit residential areas where they do not live.
They will travel to work, then travel home, then travel to commercial and leisure, and then travel home. Or something along those lines. The only reason a resident would take the metro to a different residential area would be to visit a park or attraction for its Leisure activity.

oh, I got a second reason, albeit a rare one.
when they grow up while at (parents) home they will travel to their new home.

but I agree, res to res travel is rare.

It's not res to res travel. Its travel within the same residential area. The residents are already at the metro hub (where they arrived from the commercial area), so the fastest way (by far) to go towards the other side of the residential area (where their home is), is by metro. Still. they don't do it, but take the bus instead.

I use metro hubs without issues. Could be your bus line is closer to where the people want to go.

Check for crossing points at the stations. If cims cant cross roads properly from a transport hub, they take a different route that can meaning changing PT lines unexpectedly. Since bus routes follow roads they tend to be at junctions more often, making crossing faster.

That's not the issue for sure. Many crossings, pedestrians fly-overs and bus-stops close by.
