Although if you are looking for custom setups, depends on what you are looking for, and your definition of compact.
Given the lack of real life rules, making very small custom airports that can fully serve large jets, using either the Airport Roads mod or the Airport DLC, should be a piece of cake. Whether or not they would be realistic would depend on how you built it, but obviously totally unrealistic small sizes are achievable.
As for inspiration, I would rather draw from real life; i.e. Google Maps.
For a compact example, Santos Dumont in Rio de Janeiro is one, if not the best, fitting nicely within 3/5ths of a single Cities Skylines map tile, with a tiny handful of runways that see jet service, one of the most difficult and scenic commercial aviation approaches in the world, and passenger numbers in the tens of millions per year.
