"4-lane road with bus lanes" is NOT a "4-lane road"
Via both Merriam-Webster and Cambridge dictionaries:

Definition of "with" in brackets:

[so as to be separated or detached from]: a 4-lane road "with bus lanes" means the bus lanes are separated from the 4-lane (4+2 = 6 total lanes, not 4).

[as well as]: "I'll have the Mahi Mahi 'with' white wine" ... the wine is not included with the Mahi Mahi but charged for separately and detached from the fish, i.e., the 2 bus lanes are not included but separate from the 4-lane road. Again, 4+2 =6, not 4.

[and]: "And" in this sense is the same as [as well as].

As a new player, I was laying out my grid, zoomed out far enough that I didn't see (until I zoomed in much later after much of the "4-lane with bus lanes" was laid down.

I did a double-take when I saw that, indeed, there was only ONE LANE for regular traffic in each direction with a dedicated bus lane in each direction; that is NOT as advertised, a "4-lane road with bus lanes".

Did I really help traffic flow or did I just screw up and make things worse by making the roads with the bus lanes?

You experienced players can tell us if this is doing more harm than good. You know. Traffic is a big deal in CS. Do you experienced players avoid using this so-called "4-lane road with bus lanes"?

NOTE: Many definitions and examples are given, including one that described "with" as "inclusive of".

Regardless, I do believe most new players interpret the road description the same as I did -- 1 dedicated bus lane in each direction in addition to 4 regular lanes = 6 lanes.

The 4 lane road is a 4 lane road (with bus lanes (included).
2 outside lanes are "bus priority" lanes (not fully bus dedicated).
Vehicles must clear the lane promptly if they see a bus coming.

Bus lanes will be used by other vehicles for turns, sometimes use more with increased traffic.
Longer lanes (distance) tend to be more dedicated (but still not exclusive).

That is how they are labeled in real life, as well.

Thx for reply.

That's not what Paradox says. Their description is the 4-lane Road with Bus Lanes "Has a dedicated lane for buses" (per Paradox WIKI).

The reddish color outside "Bus Lane" is a dedicated lane for buses, not just a "priority lane".

This road has one (1) lane in each direction and one (1) lane dedicated for buses only.

In effect, this is a 2-way, single lane road with an additional 1 single lane each way dedicated for buses.

"Has a dedicated lane for buses." Wording is correct.
The city transit buses are dedicated to the lanes. Coaches (like Eurolines, Greyhound) are not.
Wording is not saying that other vehicles strictly will not use them.

Result - Builder's labeling is correct.
"4-lane road with bus lanes".

Different nations and languages cause words to have different meanings.

Dictionary definition of dedicated:
* "used only for one particular purpose"
* "designed to be used for one particular purpose"

E.g. at an NFL game, a section off the field is "dedicated for media". That's media only.

Paradox states the bus lane "Has a dedicated lane for buses". A true "dedicated lane" for buses would be buses only; exclusive to buses.

Paradox made an error in its definition. Since other traffic besides buses has been seen in that lane, it is NOT a "dedicated lane for buses". Perhaps the coding is such that buses are not allowed to use the other lane but have to stay on the bus lane ... if that is correct, the bus lane is NOT a dedicated bus lane and the description should say "4-lane road with a lane where buses are required to use the bus lane only". Lengthy description but maybe this is what they meant.

I saw a van in the bus lane. Once I build my bus depot and put down my stop network, I'll follow some buses to see if they move over the non-bus lane. If indeed buses are seen driving in the "non-bus lane", then the entire road is a redundant road, no different than a regular 4-lane road.

Period.

re your, "Result - Builder's labeling is correct.

That is not true. According to standard of the word "dedicated",(at least in the USA), the lane is NOT dedicated to buses.

City buses are dedicated to the lane itself.

Thx Peter. I was going to check that as soon as my depot is built. You are saying buses are restricted to using the bus lane only. Then the correct description is buses are restricted to using the bus lane, but since other traffic can also use the bus lane, it is NOT a dedicated bus lane --the buses simply have a restriction placed upon them, but, the lane itself is not dedicated to buses (buses only).

It is a 4-way road with buses restricted to the bus lane, no restrictions on other vehicles.

That is a concise game worthy label but in fact that is what it is, not what the game says it is.

Appreciate your replies. Thx.

Let's simply check.
Name: 4-lane road with bus lanes (it is NOT named 4-lane road PLUS bus lanes!)
Are there 4 lanes? Yes (2 lanes for cars + 2 lanes for buses = 4 lanes).
Are there bus lanes? Yes.
Conclusion: correct name
Can't see anything wrong. If you need more lanes for cars place a 6-lane road with bus lanes (you'll get it: 4 lanes for cars + 2 lanes for buses ;) ).

macmorri,

This is my final comment in this thread.

re your, "Let's simply check"

Let's do that; let's simply check the Paradox WIKI which states "Four-Lane Road with Bus Lanes 'Has a dedicated lane for buses' "; that is NOT true according to proper use of the English language since vehicles other than buses can use that "mislabeled" dedicated lane.

At the Boom Town milestone, there are roads/highways/ramps that ARE dedicated as the description states, "Can only be used by emergency vehicles and buses." THAT is proper use of the word dedicated.

Key word is "only" and that makes it "dedicated".

I hope I helped new players by pointing out that "what you see or READ is not what you get" at times. Regions and nations use words differently and sometimes it is a simple grammar or typo error.

Enjoy this fun game, everyone.

@WILDIFELUVR: With all due respect mate, if this is your only problem with the game, you'll be well in front!!

Dedicated bus lanes work exactly the same as in real life. I am assuming your city doesn't have them, or you'd already know this.

The dedicated bus lanes means that buses must use bus lanes. Buses can't use other lanes.

Other vehicles can use bus lanes if they wish.

Buses are just too big to be zig-zagging in and out of lanes and making traffic jams worse.

Here's what the wiki says on dedicated bus lanes. which I'm sure you read and just ignored it to try and twist it the way you wanted it to be.

Dedicated bus lanes
A bus lane or bus-only lane is a lane restricted to buses, often on certain days and times, and generally used to speed up public transport that would be otherwise held up by traffic congestion. The related term busway describes a roadway completely dedicated for use by buses.[/quote]

Your definition would be busway!

I hope this clears things up.

I'm guessing this is just a troll to keep the discussions section interesting.... BUT, You've just discovered the difference between "WITH" and, "AND" lol AND,,, thank you for starting this thread. Now the rest of us, can quit worrying that any of us are the most anal/obsessive person in the community. lol
Sheldon Cooper would be proud.
