How to get 1000 abandoned buildings? They keep disappearing!!!
I posted something similar earlier but I thought this should be a separate topic. I'm trying to unlock the observatory and I need 1000 abandoned buildings. Someone suggested I let garbage pile up. Others suggested cut off electricity. No matter what way I try I can't seem to get past 60-70 abandoned buildings as they seem to disappear too fast. Any ideas on keeping abandoned buildings around longer? They aren't rebuilding, just disappearing and leaving an empty plot :/

Do you have the auto-bulldozing mod?

Nope. They are just disappearing on their own.....

I'll try that next. The problem isn't getting the buildings to become abandoned, it's getting them to hang around long enough to get to 1000 without them demolishing themselves after about 30 seconds.
Massive flooding might help.

you don't even need a flood :D just build a big city and cut off one area from all of the sewage outputs on the river. You'll get 1,000 abandoned buildings really quick :3 so long as the problem remains unfixed the abandoneds will continue to pile up.

They disappear because the area is still being developed due to continued demand. You need to stop businesses/people from wanting to live in your city. The best way is to make your city a cesspool nobody wants to live in.

Or..... you can get yourself a nice sized city and turn off all the electricity. People will leave. Buildings will be abandoned. It will take a while but it will happen. Just make sure you have the cash reserves to cover you until it is rebuilt after you turn the electricity back on.

That's how I got my 1,000 abandoned buildings.

When I did this, my city was around 150k population and they had everything they needed and so were very happy. High happiness will balance out the severity of effect that the piles of garbage had on them so that the abandonment slowly but surely took place and they didn't immediately pack up and leave. As joewagner says above, since the city was already well established and growth was low. The abandoned buildings were also slow to repopulate and therefore there was ample time to get the 2k abandoned buildings required.
they will rebuild by their own if a( the place is very good for a business or b( the land price and the tax rate is not very high and maybe a, then a new business will move in to the abandoned building, so you have to rise the tax or just make them next to a polluted area, then maybe new businesses won't move in. another way to complete the 1K abandoned buildings easier, is to build 1000+ commercial/office buildings far far away from the residence area or just demolish all of the residence area(but remember to safe before doing that if u've already got 10K+ pop) then the com/office buildings won't have anyone to work for them so they will be abandoned really quickly, then build a huge area of industrial buildings and buildings that have a very big pollution area, or u can try to rise tax rate, and make the land value as high as possible.

This should do the trick. If you want to keep your population high and not wait for it to rebuild, , then keep residential low and commerce, industry, and office very high. Like +25%.

Cims will be happy to stay unemployed and not leave town with taxes low. below 12%

Then when you lower taxes back to normal, then there will be plenty of workers available to occupy jobs immediately. Should recover in no time.

EDIT:

Make sure you don't have a bulldozer mod. Abandoned buildings will not vanish and leave an empty plot on their own. Abandoned buildings will stay forever until you bulldoze them, unless other cims move into them, then they will auto-bulldoze and rebuild right away.
