Cities: Skylines

Would upgrading from 16GB ram to 32GB improve my performance?
So I play cities skylines a lot and I have been interested in using mods and assets ever since I started, although the only issue with this is that after I download all the assets and mods I need, my fps degrades horribly from 80 fps to roughly 30 fps.

Speaking of which, I do currently have a decent computer with pretty good specs, due to this I'm assuming that it would most likely be my ram being the main setback.

pc specs:

2 HyperX Predator RGB 2933 MHz 8GB ram cards
gtx 1060 6GB armored edition
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X Processor
ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F GAMING, Socket-AM4 motherboard

This will happen without mods.

I have a GTX 1080 8GB and I average about 35FPS zoomed in on a busy area of my city that has no workshop.

Hey, I have that motherboard. It is awesome. but more RAM won't make your computer run faster. It will just hold more data. RAM is no different than a hard drive in that aspect.

Considering the game rarely even uses ant more than a few hundred assets at once, then 16GB should be enough.

If you run our of RAM, then consider removing unused workshop. Be more selective what workshop you use, and only subscribe things you need when you subscribe to them.

If you need more ram, then you can increase your virtual memory. Windows recommends it to three times your RAM. So, just increase your pagefile size to 48GB and it will give you virtually 64GB of RAM.

You'll rarely ever use more than 16GB of RAM at one time, so you should have no issue with the game once it is loaded with 32GB of workshop. The other 48GB will be ready for use if you need it.

Here's an article "Optimize Windows for better performance" from Microsoft on increasing your page file size. Skip down to the last section "Change the size of virtual memory". Start at step two and hit the start button and type "Advanced System Settings" and open that app.

Just make sure your Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB) are both 48000.

If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, then go ahead and add more RAM.

But, you're still going to be stuck at around 30 fps or worse, no matter what you do!

EDIT, if you let Windows manage your page (Default Setting) then you will run into all kinds of issues. Windows is not very smart and will be constantly changing the pagefile size and give hour long load times and usually crashing from timing out while waiting for itself to try and create a pagefile.

32GB should be plenty, 8GB is about enough to run the base game with a couple of DLC's, if your a mod and asset lover then having as much ram and virtual memory is the key.

I have 16GB as well and my pc uses 48GB of virtual ram, upgrading to 32GB would reduce the strain on my VRam and would definitely help matters.

How does virtual memory work? I only have 8gb of ram, would increasing virtual memory help?
virtual memory is used if you don't have enough RAM to cope with what your system needs. virtual memory is just hard drive space that is reserved for this purpose. hard drive is significantly slower than RAM (an SSD may mitigate this to some extent) so while this allows you to use more memory than you have it comes at a cost of speed.

Thank you for the great reply, you even managed to answer all of the follow-up questions I would've had!

Your post definitely contains all of the information I needed to make up my mind and make a final decision on the matter.

It helops if you actually use your words. lol
I think that if you dont bother looking at in-game FPS counter then a 30 fps "issue" would go away.:steamfacepalm:

Great idea!
I have a 6 year old rig running a GTX 680 with 4MB, and 8GB of RAM and the game is smooth as silk on 1080. Yet to reach a big city, fires keep destroying everything, but for now it runs fine.
My CPU is fine it stays at a consistant temperature of around 50-70 degrees celcius. Its my RAM that has a high usage around 85-100 %. Im running with 8gb of ram packed in with 52 mods and 823 assets. So will upgrading from 8 to 16gb improve performance overall?

No, but it will allow for more workshop.
I had 16 gb, but now i bought +8 gb special for C:S. If you wanna play witj a lot of mods you will need 16-32 GB. But if you talk about perfomance, only SSD will help you.
I saw a significant tick up with going from 16 > 32 G, Also a ssd upgrade really helped also
How many hz on your Ram?
